Niiice, just entering Round Three and we've already been through over 1000 posts of discussion. Let's keep up the strong pace! We ALSO enter R3 with eliminations heating up big time... there are 163 of the original 213 entrants who still have a shot at the Championship, but that total is going to start dropping like a stone now that points have again doubled. Exciting stuff!

First I'd like to note that we smashed the previous record for attendance; there were 183 Gurus in 2007, this time we had well over 200 submit a bracket, whoo hooo!

Alright, let's talk a little about the features you see here.

Risks are now accurate as in, that's how many times you have a different character in that position as compared to this year's Guru Cookie.

Status, as in whether your bracket is Alive or Dead, as in "is it still possible for me to win the Guru Contest if everything goes perfectly for me?" will once again be handled this year by our friend LtK. It's certainly going to be much harder to accurately calculate than in past years, so hopefully Mr. Kettch is up to the challenge. Because if not, I'm sure as heck not going to touch it!

Today's Pick is everyone's choice for the poll that is currently taking place. Anytime someone picked against the Cookie for this match their choice will show in red.

You'll also notice that we've got a returning favorite from last season... personal bracket pages! Just click your name anywhere on the site and you'll be taken to a listing of your bracket, complete with your score, DoA status, total risks, and a dangerous red marking on all your picks that are risky. For example, here's the bracket for this year's riskiest picker, Han, who guessed against the Cookie a full 54 times.

But my favorite thing about the site is how we now have a complete listing of the Guru prediction stats, ie how many of us picked which characters in all 63 matches. With so many debatable matches, I think this is something people are really going to want to take a look at as the Contest progresses. You can scan the results yourself at

But that's not all! Say you glance through and notice that nine crazy people have Liquid Snake advancing out of round one ahead of Luigi. Who would do such a thing, you wonder. Well now you can find out in a moment, by clicking Who Picked Who in the results table! That will take you to one of the 63 Complete Matchup Predictions pages, in this case

Why, it was FD, Fett, raytan, Viviff, Doma, LinkLegend, VicPez, arkenaga, and XIII, the knuckleheads!

(BTW, if you're interested in previous results, the rankings and brackets from CB5, BSE, and CB6 are both linked from the top of every page.)

One new addition for this season are the clickable column headers on the main page. You can resort the rankings by name, score (the default), fixed score, today's pick, tiebreaker, or number of total upsets selected by clicking those headers on the top of the page.

Oh, and there's also been two new additions to the personal bracket pages. If you click the ">" for any match you'll be taken to the full Guru breakdown for that poll, in terms of who picked whom. Also, the thengamer supercomputer is now running a complex and highly scientific analysis on every Guru's bracket, and has been set to display its thoughts on the bracket's overall quality at the bottom of the page. That's pretty cool, IMO.

A perfect result for the Gurus! Not only did all 7 of our LBers call this result correctly, the casuals were poor enough at predicting it that 3 more of our members will able to split onto the list, boosting us to a much more respectable 10! As for tonight... well, you'd THINK it would be great, considering that Zack ended up the pretty heavy Guru favorite here, but unfortunately only 5 of our 10 LBers picked him. On the plus side the casuals had a serious lack of faith in Zack as well (only 29% had him advancing to R3), and also Prophet and Ngirl picked him correctly so hopefully we'll be able to replace any losses we might take.

Oh my, what a disastrous turn of events! Gone are the days when you could miss a result and only fall a dozen places on the LB... with points once again doubling, not backing ZACKFAQs was the death of a dream for those 5 Gurus. The only one to miss him and still survive was Smurf, but of course he didn't send in a bracket so we don't much care! On the plus side we had 4 smart Zack pickers move up to replace our loses... except that yo edited his bracket too late and just misses the LB as a result. Overall we fall to 8, which isn't bad, expect that 4 of the 10 listed above took MMX for the win today. You've got to figure that a Mario win was the "obvious" choice with the casuals, so I think we're going to be in for a beating come midnight.

About time I'm up on the chopping block....

My guru/main bracket is screwed anyway, I think I'm rooting for Samus > Vincent just for more points on my alt bracket and hopefully getting that up on the leaderboard. I doubt today's correct result will be enough, hopefully tomorrow could propel me, but I still doubt it, then I fall back down on the L-Block match....

Goddamn this is the closest I've EVER been to the leaderboard, 223 points with the lowest point value in the top 50 being 224. I can taste it...I hope Samus > Vincent does it for me.

...and that's because after today I have no chance of seeing the leaderboard, with Ryu SF and Yoshi advancing in this round :(

30 points behind? This isn't looking good. Yesterday was one of my last big hopes at catching up to the majority of the pack too. Guess I still got half points, but would have been good to be that bit closer.

Should try and work out who is likely to eliminate me, I'll probably find out with the next L-block match though.

Wow, if L-Block loses here or next round, I still have a glimmer of hope. Although, I need Dante or Master Chief to beat Sonic to win, kind of a longshot. And for Dante to save me, I'd need Dante > Kirby this round to actually pass dethetc (lol scoring system; I have MC > Kirby and he has MC > Dante) before tying him in the rest of the matches, and of course I'd need to be perfect on everything besides the Seph/Sonic/(Dante/Kirby/Chief/Leon) match round 4 and on.

Falling off the Leaderboard: Prophet, Pianist, lubaris

Bit of an odd result for us... even thought Samus beating out Vince was the easy consensus, it failed to help us thanks to a bigger number than I'd have expected reaching for the Vincent upset. Worse is that we could have had an excellent turnover, expect that lubaris just barely fell off the LB and three others came within having submitted sooner of making it in but came up just a little short. That lowers us to being represented by 11 Gurus. For tomorrow, the good news is that our #1 and #3 were both pretty brilliant, taking Pika for this unlikely upset! The bad news is... they were the only ones! We'll see how badly the casuals slaughter us as a result, but in any case that's a small price to pay for having that Block thrown out on the street.

I'd say the MC upset is very much alive still. Sephiroth > Chief > Sonic > Kirby is still a possible result. Sephiroth pushes the percentages down to hard core fanbases, Kirby hurts Sonic's Nintendo support. And Sonic certainly hasn't looked like a powerhouse so far.

I'm really shocked more didn't have WCC here. Zero was the favorite to be in this match, and seeing L Block last year, it wouldn't be a COMPLETE shock for another popular joke character to be able to take advantage of their splitting fanbase.

Well, I definitely would have taken WCC for second here before even thinking about Sandbag advancing in its second round match. I guess it is kinda weird for those who did have Sandbag going far but had WCC getting stopped here. But Zero wasn't a guarantee to make it that far, WCC wasn't a guarantee to have L-Block power, and Mega Man wasn't a guarantee to flop even if Zero was around. Mega Man was just a safer choice.

Oh my! For such an unexpected outcome, you'd think the results would have been much more painful than they ended up being. And actually they probably should have been... look at how hardcore we lucked out, with Gurus filling 7 of the final 10 position on the leaderboard! That slick save allowed us to maintain our 11 positions from last night- pretty decent, especially since only 1 Guru in our top 50 picked anything aside from Snake > Mega Man for today. Just need MM to make this Day Vote comeback on the Cube and we should pretty much be a lock for a new Guru LB representation record!

Oh, and there must be a problem with earth angel's bracket... I think we've been over this before but they never responded? I forget. MJ, do you think you could look into the matter, if you haven't already?

Wow, Yoblazer is the only one with Cube advancing today? Crazy. The site says he's alive, but I don't think he is. With L-Block and Sandbag lost I don't think he can possibly get enough points to claim victory, not with a Link > L-Block final.

Doing a quick look over of your bracket, having Snake take second without Link in first would probably have you winning. But the chances of that happening are almost non-existent, so you are pretty much de-facto eliminated at this point.

Well now this is just patently absurd. The entire GameFAQs Top 57 appears to have picked Snake > Mega Man for yesterday... and because only 5% of the site correctly placed WCC in second, and probably only 4% also had Snake in first, and that entire 4% are goofy-to-horrible brackets, no one advanced to push anyone on the LB out! What an awesome piece of news, as it allows us to maintain our 12 LB positions, with a good possibility of adding many more in the near future! Well, unless the casuals backed Mewtwo here, but that doesn't seem too likely.

Also eangel, I take that back... there DOES appear to be a problem with your bracket, although it's only a minor one. Your Guru has 259 pts right now while your real bracket has only 257. Could you look it over and find where the mistake is?

DomaDragoon was the only Guru to correctly predict StarCraft's win over Kingdom Hearts in R2 of the '04 Game Contest. Although, there were only 30 Gurus predicting for that original Guru Contest, so being the only one doesn't mean nearly as much.

Otherwise... hmm, it appears that Sabin Figaro somehow managed to call Pikachu > Dante correctly in R3 last year, and he was the only Guru to do so. Also, the Dante > Amaterasu result in R2 was a stunner, but looks like two Gurus were able to predict it (Pats D and Lagoona).

So yeah, this was the third time that someone has ever stood on their own against the might of the entire Guru force and survived.

Oh good gracious! The crazy thing is, Mewtwo's win wasn't actually a bad result for us... only 4% of the site had him advancing at all, and so even though only a few of our top contenders called the result correctly, we didn't lose too many spots on the LB as a result. The trouble is just... remember how we got incredibly lucky the past two days, hanging on with 7 of the final 10 positions on the Top 50? Well today we got incredibly UNLUCKY- all 7 fell off. But that's not the worst of it. We actually own five out of the seven positions for 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, and 57 on the current ranks! Talk about a slap in the face. So anyways, down to just 6 representing us on the board, but that's going to change a ton once this next result goes final. There's so much variety in our picks that I'm not even sure what result would hurt or help us... just be aware that massive turnover is on the way!

Right. Which is why Kirby > MC was a much smarter pick than MC > Dante, yet they are worth equal points. I'm getting eliminated because I have MC > Kirby when the other guy has MC > Dante, which is just dumb.

Oh well, I'm glad I get a full 8 points for having Dante in second, lol scoring system. I'm proud of my run, managed to hang tough until the end. I think I peaked at number 12 in the Guru rankings and 50 something overall in the contest - I know at one point I was just a spot or two away from the leaderboard, easily my best performance ever in these contests. I set a personal record :). Managed to outlast a few contest "big-namers" before getting eliminated as well.

Updated! With the Dante result applied, only 61 Gurus are still in contention for the win. Once this Sonic result goes final, that will be down to a mere 58.

SO. I think it's time for those 58 to start considering which game they're going to choose for the upcoming Contest, should things play out in their favor! (Well, yo doesn't need to bother, but everyone else can!)

Well well! Hardly anyone correctly predicted the wild Kirby upset, but because we were so sure of a MC > Dante result in this one the entire LB was bailed out and given half credit for what was in reality a very bad pick. Three cheers for the awful scoring system! That boosts us back to a more respectable 9 members representing us on the LB. Special note: Chic is the first Guru so far to make the LB despite being eliminated from the competition! So, congrats... sort of. Special note #2 - andy correctly called the Kirby upset and is now first place worldwide, and by a full 6 points! This is the first time we've controlled the top spot on the LB all season, aside from early ties and those days when Smurf would have been in first had he sent a bracket.

PS - Lightning, we need to talk! You're not listed on the leaderboard with that name... there IS a person named "Lightning_guy" who I'd assume is you, expect that he has 276 pts instead of 275. If that's your universal name then I need you to check your Guru bracket and see what first round mistake is costing you one point.

The good news: it was a perfect day for the Gurus! The bad news: it was a perfect day for nearly everyone else as well. We've got some pretty smart pickers near the top of the board by this time in the season, and so Sonic's advancement only cleared up two spots on the LB, not quite enough to let Jman or Andy slip back on. andy continues to control the worldwide lead by 6, and we maintain those 9 overall positions.

Waaaaait a minute, this is super-weird. Of those 9 Gurus on the LB currently, only 3 went with the vast majority and predicted Mario to advance today. All the other 6 went with MMX for some crazy reason! Jman and Andy and possibly Shake as well were smart with Mario and will be there to shield the blow somewhat, but still, ouch, we're in for a major hurting come midnight.

Unless, of course, Zack were to complete this comeback attempt...

These don't happen earlier in the contest because there are usually weak characters that can mathematically keep these brackets alive. There might be some more that occur in this match that I've missed.

More eliminations after the match starts if another result seems possible.

No, Samus > Pikachu DEFINITELY eliminates some people - I'm certain I would be eliminated, because I have Link > Crono in the next round and Snake > Cloud in the same round isn't a wild enough upset to help me. It doesn't really matter, Samus > Pikachu isn't going to happen.

Crono's not going to beat Vincent IMO.

Crono's part Nintendo, and with 2 Nintendo characters and a part-Nintendo character along with a Square character from FFVII, I think Crono's sorta screwed.

I'm basically putting faith in two things on Samus > Crono here:

1) Crono is stronger than Vincent, SFF aside.
2) I don't think Samus and Pikachu overlap Crono's fanbase that badly.

I'm still terrified. Everything for me now banks on this, and Snake > Cloud in the second-to-last match.

I think Link/Zero have a far larger overlap with Crono than Samus/Pikachu, and I don't see Vincent gaining since last year.

Unfortunately this is probably true. And if she were miraculously able to get there, that would mean she had new random resistance to Link, which would make Cloud > Link quite likely >_>
I just felt I had to make an upset predix sometime during the final rounds...

What a terrible, terrible outing for the Gurus! Like I mentioned yesterday, it was just crazy how so many of our top predictors to this point went out on a limb and took that MMX upset, and boy did we pay dearly for it. I'd hoped that at least Haste would be able to survive with his half points, considering how he'd been ranked #5 on the site up until midnight hit, but nope, the points doubling made this too big a mistake for even a former top fiver to live through. Luckily all 3 of our guys just off the LB last time were smart and took Mario, boosting us back to 6 total spots now controlled.

For tonight... chaos and Haste had L involved, we'll be saying goodbye to them. Biolizard and Zylo figure to jump onto the scene if Crono can hold Vince off. Aside from those guys a VV advancement should help everyone else out.

But... junk that noise. Go Crono!

Well, I'm done, but this is by far the best bracket I've ever had. I've never even sniffed the leaderboard until this contest, but I was able to make multiple appearances in this contest, even as late as this match!

I think it's pretty safe to say this is the best bracket I've had yet by a long long way, even if I'm off the leaderboard by the end of the contest. I was on the leaderboard for the first time ever after Liquid > Luigi, and it's now my... 23rd consecutive day there, and 3rd at the top. None of my upsets have failed me since MM > Olimar in round one, but there's one left that may go slightly wrong. Fingers crossed for the impossibility of Link > Samus and Link > Cloud. >_>

Oh man, that's the wildest thing I've ever seen! We had only 6 Gurus on the Leaderboard last night, all 6 of them mess up by taking Vincent (well actually chaos had L-Block, but anyways), that mistakes costs all but one of them a position in the Top 50. And yet, because apparently no one else on the site had any faith in Crono whatsoever, we're not punished but rather REWARDED with 10 new spots on the Leaderboard, taking us all the way to 11! In other exciting news, andy could afford to pick Vincent yesterday while still maintaining a 12 point lead over the next closest Guru; talk about domination (to this point)!

Also, could anyone say who Zea and MZ are on the Leaderboard?

Oh and uh, things look very good for tonight, with everyone in contention except for MZ having called this result correctly.

Well, a really good result for the Gurus, but unfortunately a great result for everyone else as well. Only 1 or possibly 2 people on the Top 50 did not correctly call this Cloud > Snake result, and sad to say one of them was our own MZ, which knocks us back to step to 10 Gurus listed on the leaderboard. For this upcoming result, every Guru in the world (except for 1) had Sephiroth winning and 0 predictors had faith in Kirby, which means we'll all be getting half points. But will any casuals have been smart enough to go Kirby and cost us LB spots? Let's find out!

Hey look at that, at least two people on the LB correctly placed Kirby in second, pushing our Gurus down a little bit- wasn't sure anyone would have made that huge risk at this point. But that's okay, doesn't cost us any spots and we stay with 10 representing us on the top of the charts. Things look pretty dire for tomorrow though: only Kleenex, voltch, and Para correctly picked Crono to advance. Hopefully WalrusJump will be cracking the rankings once this goes final to help us limit the damage, but I don't know how much more we can count on beyond that...

still alive, without a winner in site for at least a couple more hours. With any luck if Cloud>Snake hits I can sneak my way onto the leaderboard. Keep an eye out for Joey Patel. He will be the guy who has two more points than Heroic Viktor's guru bracket. I never did figure out how to screen shot the whole bracket, so hopefully a leaderboard visit can confirm my Bowser>L. Snake mix-up.

Best of luck to everyone; today proves I have a 0% chance of hitting Link>Snake tomorrow, but even being alive this long is awesome.

So Vincent won and should be in today's match - if Allen is too dumb to realise this (and he is), I'd expect NGamer to not be that much of a sheep as to merely replicate such an obviously BS result.

Then lets go back and change the results of Mario beating Crono in 2003, Starcraft beating Wind Waker, Frog beating Axel and Master Chief, and plenty of other matches! None of those should be counted!

Could someone explain the rationale behind the "fixed" scoring method listed?

Given the problem of scoring brackets choosing a top two in each poll, I would propose award a point for each pairwise ordering predicted correctly - there are six pairings for a four character poll, but one is ignored (since the prediction doesn't order the bottom two), for a possible five points.

So, for a poll that finished A>B>C>D, you would score as follows:

5 points - A>B
4 points - A>C, B>A
3 points - A>D, B>C, C>A
2 points - B>D, C>B, D>A
1 point - C>D, D>B
0 points - D>C

So that's how I would do things. But I was curious what the reason was for the "fixed" system - why, for example, would A>C be worth the same number of points as C>A?

That said, I'm thinking about what game I'll choose but I'm not sure yet. It won't be Wand of Gamelon or Faces of Evil, the games themselves suck and don't represent what I love about them, the characters. If I wanted a Zelda game in it would be Link's Awakening.

The only problem with LA is that while it IS my favorite game, we're going to have like four other Zelda games in the contest anyway, so it A) sort of lacks intrigue and B) makes me a hypocrite because I always complain about having too many FF characters.

Man thinking of a game to nominate is way harder than a character. Like, we've had so many character battles, that we've gotten just about every character in, and there's basically no chance to get in a new character who would have a chance at winning more than one match, so I can just have fun with it and do something stupid. But we've only had one games contest and there's a ton of snubs who could potentially make a huge run! And they could be games I like! I actually have a chance to make a difference with a games nomination!

That's another thing, I'm a much more games-oriented than character-oriented person, there are really only a small handful of characters that make a huge impression on me but there's a ton of games I love. Like I don't really care that much about Link or Mario, but I care a lot more about the Zelda and Mario games themselves.

Eh, I don't think we have to worry too much about StarFox 64. It won the Rally Tourney along with Pokemon R/B/Y and DKC2, so it should be safe to say that all three of those games will be getting a good amount of support once the nominations come online.

Okami is another possibility I had considered, but I think I can do better. Okami will probably be about as strong as Amaterasu so that's not really anything great.

Rallying a Mega Man game in might be nice. Like Mega Man 2. It probably has an okay shot anyway, but I don't know.

Ouch, Crono really does a number on us! We fall from 10 Gurus on the LB to just 7 due to that upset... but really we just got lucky that so few casuals gave Crono any kind of shot, as we at least were able to move 4 new names onto the board. Plus, we now control 3 of the Top Ten spots, which is pretty cool. Best of all though, Crono's win moves creativename into sole possession of first place. AND, he picked Snake for the win today, which means creative is going to be the GameFAQs Champion for '08! That is just so cool. Hopefully everyone else in the Top Ten took Cloud, so that Para and cn could be right next to each other on top of the LB.

Yonex, you would be A point ahead of me, and I would say it would be almost impossible to not make the leaderboard. We're in the top 100 right now, and I strongly doubt half of the top hundred has Link>Snake, if it holds.

The only question is can you make it into the top 10 for qualifying brackets...

Haha, I didn't say I would use Majora's Mask, if it holds, but I do love that game.

I just think it has such a great chance making it in anyway. It was one of the biggest snubs from the last one.
