Good news, everyone! The Guru site for the '10 season is now up and running!

First off, a big round of applause for fett, jose, and Spike, our three tireless workers who entered an astounding 220+ brackets for this season- easily a new Guru record!

As for the features on the site, you should be used to most of them by now if you participated in the Guru last season. There have been a few tweaks however- one is that due to popular demand I've decided to list the "Guru Cookie" on the rankings this season. (The Cookie is the most "cookie cutter" bracket possible, aka it always selects our most popular choice for each match.) HOWEVER, the Cookie will not cost anyone a ranking position; for instance it's tied for first right now, but listed in "0th" place so that Leon gets to keep the #1 next to his name.

Some returning features:

* click any user's name anywhere on the site to see their bracket

* you can re-sort the main page by score (default), TB, risks, their pick in the current match, Dead/Alive status, or even alphabetically by username- just click the headers

* currently "Today's Pick" is pointing to Match 5, Luigi vs Meta Knight. if you'd rather see everyone's pick for the next match, change the dropdown to "6" and hit the button- now you see all the picks for Shadow vs Ammy!

* any pick anywhere on the site that goes against the Guru Cookie is rewarded with red text

But surely the most popular feature of all are those Guru Stats! You can check them at any time by clicking "Matchup Stats" on top, which takes you to

Here we have the listing of every match along with how many brackets picked each possible winner.

NEW FEATURE! Handy color coded text on the left to remind you whether that poll will be a Day Match, Night Match, or 24 hour poll.

OLD FEATURE! Click the "Who Picked Whom" button to see the complete listing of what users selected each winner in their brackets.

Actually, looking at my bracket listed on the Guru, it says I have Snake > Sephiroth. I thought I mentioned that I needed that changed in the Guru topic, but maybe I forgot.

I have Sephiroth > Snake there.

I initially had my tiebreaker at 111111 and then altered it to 202202 (as shown on the Guru) but it seems that didn't take and my bracket still has 111111. Well it probably won't matter in the end anyway, both numbers are pretty bad now that I think about it.

Woah apparently on the guru site I have Terra going to round 4... but in my bracket she loses to Squall in round two. Also In my bracket I have Kefka losing in round one and he is advancing on my guru page. I also didn't choose Ryu over Chief in Round 2. Other then those everything else is right.

There used to be, but I remember NGamer saying it took a lot of memory (?) everytime someone called it. It was at all_brackets.php but it's not there now. There should be a page hidden somewhere though so that someone can use it to run the elimination script.

I love how I'm the only one that has Wander winning... Yeah, I know it's not gonna happen, but seeing how Falcon most likely is gonna die spectacularly in the second round anyway I thought it didn't matter and I just really want Wander to win something at some point.

Oh, and I have Kefka winning over Arthas in my bracket... But it's entered as Arthas winning in the Guru bracket... So might wanna fix that...

Don't worry everyone, fett will be along shortly to make your bracket updates! Just keep posting as you notice things and he'll take care of them.

I agree with red sox- our picks aren't really that cookieish this season, it just feels that way since we so used to 4ways, where I basically marked you down for a risk every time you looked at me cross eyed.

Ngal is correct, there's a page to display all brackets but I have it hidden since doing 200 x 127 matches is just a BIT much for my tastes. When LtK and Rocky arrive I'll give them the link so they can set up their elimination scripts.

There will only be 45 perfects left after a grand total of five matches. That's pretty insane. Strange how Shadow was the favorite overall, but half the perfects had Ammy!

Well, this is the third 50/50 tossup in six matches, and we'll have four out of eight once Drake/Boss rolls around. I can't recall seeing a contest with so many debated matches right away.

I checked it manually. Identical brackets will have the same score, "Today's Pick" and number of risks. Most brackets won't have that many other brackets that have matching values for all three. From there, you just check the brackets against yours to see if there is a match or not.

In the past we've run a nightly update in this topic called "The Leaderboard Watch" that would track which Gurus were listed in the overall Top 50. But this year Menji is doing a very good job keeping track of all that info over in his own topic, plus he's keeping a running tally of days spent on the leaderboard, so I'd highly suggest that anyone interested give his thread a tag.

Honestly, I'll probably lose on Zack/Yuna. I just thought Yuna was a worthwhile pick to take. I think she's underrated and Zack's probably overrated. If she wins, I get bragging rights. If I lose, it's just one point.

Will do. But I think that might be all of them. I only changed the top 2 rounds of my bracket prior to contest because of the influence in the forums here. Needless I still have 2 losses thanks to Magus and whatever the match after that was but I hope to make some good headway with my next 5-10 picks.

Wow, I was checking the pics for each match. And All 227 people have Mario and Link going into the quarterfinals.

All 227 people have Link reaching the Semi Finals.

yeah, we essentially already saw kefka/arthas in 2005. Theres no reason to expect a big change. If anything, Arthas will do better then Kefka did since he's gotten WoW boost since 2007 when he barely beat Diablo (he wasn't even announced for WoW yet at that point)

My thinking is that Arthas is too tied to WoW (yeah, I know he's in WC3 too) these days and that the dislike of WoW in general is just too great on this site. Diablo doesn't have that problem. That was a 4-way, it's not really applicable. Diablo is a convenient fall back guy, if you don't like/don't know the other guy you can always vote for Diablo instead cause he's the more or less the devil and the kiddies thinks that's bad ass (whatever). In a 4-way however, the chance of you finding atleast one character you like is so much greater that Diablo won't get those freebee votes anymore and has to earn his support on his own merits and then he falls through. Being in a 1vs1 is greatly beneficial to him. For example, if Diablo and Arthas faced each other in a 1 vs 1 match, I'd pick Diablo without a doubt. In a 4-way though... To be honest I'm surprised that Arthas didn't pull away more than he did in that match...

It's not like this match result validates 4way or anything. Altair lost to Duke twice. Marth beat Duke (in their fairest 2008 match) and was probably about even with him 1v1. Donkey Kong is definitely stronger than Marth (fair 4way match from 2007). Vivi just dispatched Donkey Kong easily. Some fair 4way results (no joke characters, no major SFF in any of them) that suggest Vivi should roll over Altair even if it is a day match. Heck, you can take Liquid's fairest result from 2008 (the one where he broke 45% on Luigi) to suggest that Altair can easily handle Luigi now and that Vivi should in turn be a top ten threat or something. So many of those fourway matches are forked, and simply handpicking some matches to prove that the results largely hold true is unfair.

Yuna declining because of FFX-2? That's just silly. Yuna doesn't become as strong as Aerith because FFX-2 made her weaker. She's honestly probably the second strongest FFX character nowadays. It's not like FFX wasn't well-received. Yes, it's not as strong as FFVII, but it ain't gonna stop Auron from whipping Aerith in a few days. It didn't stop Squall from rocking Aerith a couple of years ago.

Also, Zack starring in Crisis Core really doesn't mean that much here because PSP ownership is pretty low, relatively speaking. I doubt it made him much stronger than he already is.

I, at least, would have picked Ocarina in a fair match but went with FFVII because I had FFVII/Ocarina/LttP/MGS as the final. I think the general consensus was that nothing that made it out of the top half could hurt FFVII as much as LttP would hurt Ocarina. Kudos to those who went with Ocarina anyway.

Little did we suspect the drastic drop in strength from pretty much all SNES-and-earlier games that rendered the LttP argument somewhat moot.

Well, OOT did improve when LTTP and FFX were taken out, and FFX was the worst game in the entire bracket to be with FFVII in the final. FFVII may well have won an FFVII/OOT/LTTP/MGS final.

Besides, LTTP would still blowout FFX, Ulti-style! Everything outside of the 32/64 division was massively overrated in 2004 thanks to FFVII being the obvious winner of the contest after it defeated OOT.

The only reason I picked FF7 is because I had a final of LTTP, FF7, OOT and I think, the latter of which was my fanboy logic upset special -- Zelda overlap versus a lone FF7, in other words. I can 100% promise I would have picked Ocarina 1 on 1, based entirely on the series contest and recent trending.

The reason so many people picked FF7 wasn't because we thought it was stronger. Very few people thought that actually, we just forgot about the Nintendo faithfuls amazing ability to fall into line.

I seriously doubt OOT would have been the Guru favorite if it had been 1v1. It would have been a lot closer, sure, but the majority still thought FFVII was a notch stronger. The cookie cutter final four was FFVII/OOT/LTTP/FFX, and it's not like that group dramatically favors FFVII. Nintendo's ability to fall in line had been talked about (well at least by me, Nintendo = Republicans aw yeah) for quite some time before that.

"Vastly" I have to disagree with. I'd say the Guru would have been very close to a 50/50 split had we known that Ocarina and FF7 would square off 1v1 after the main bracket was over. Now, OoT would obviously have been vastly favored in the Oracle since we'd have already seen it win the day before, but I maintain that there were still a huge number of FF7 backers right up to the final week, at least.

Not to mention, there were far more games that could have been in FFX's place, but LttP was considered much more likely.

60.65% took LttP to the final compared to 45.83% taking FFX. Include Nintendo games in total, and FF7 looks like the safe bet.

I assume the cookie for round 2 and beyond is based on who cookies through to the round. So for hypothetical numbers:

R1
Charizard - 60%
Duke - 40%

Kratos - 80%
Tails - 20%

R2
Charizard- 30%
Duke - 40%
Kratos - 25%
Tails - 5%

The cookie for round 2 would be Charizard, even though Duke has a higher Guru %age in actuality right?

I assume the cookie for round 2 and beyond is based on who cookies through to the round. So for hypothetical numbers:

R1
Charizard - 60%
Duke - 40%

Kratos - 80%
Tails - 20%

R2
Charizard- 30%
Duke - 40%
Kratos - 25%
Tails - 5%

The cookie for round 2 would be Charizard, even though Duke has a higher Guru %age in actuality right?

As a little preview, it looks to me like SuperLuigi, TheArkOfTurus, Mac Arrowny, CP724, Xeybozn, cf and Charmander are all eliminated already. Doesn't look like there'll be any more until the Tidus/Sub-Zero match, though I'm not as confident about that (Things like Kratos losing would mess people up).

Also noticed that mentalmike's bracket has Sora > Bowser and then Bowser > Kratos.

If anyone wants to see who their nearest competition is, just ask and I'll post them.

I'm kind of surprised there are no eliminations yet. I mean I suppose we do have 127 matches, but with 63-match 1v1 brackets, eliminations come pretty quickly in the first round. For example, in 2004, I lost my perfect on the 30th match and was eliminated from the Guru at the same time.

Doesn't matter how many points 4th round matches are when people have identical brackets passed the first 2 rounds. Like I said, these brackets are eliminated already. I'll add in the eliminators if you wanna look them up, thought Rock would have the list up already.

Choosing bad upsets is even worse than choosing no upsets. Choosing a pile of upsets may help prevent early elimination, but if they are wrong you ultimately won't win.

Indeed. Getting eliminated after missing a single round 1 match even when your bracket is excellent, because someone had the exact same bracket as you except for that 1 match, sucks. You might still end up really really high on the final leaderboard, but there's no hope of victory.
