SB has not officially given us word on what the next site-wide Contest will be, or when it's going to start. This is entirely understandable; he has a tremendous daily workload that keeps him very busy throughout the week, and probably has had very little (if any) time to prepare for or think much about the 2008 Contest season.

Unfortunately there's nothing we can do for him there- but what we can do is to make it exceedingly clear that we would like to see a Game Contest in 2008. Hopefully this topic will serve as a firm step in that direction. Don't think of this as a traditional "petition" so much as it is a general showing of interest. To make a long story short,

If you would like to see GameFAQs hold a Game Contest in 2008, please make a post saying

As to specifics, those who sign in this topic will be making a statement saying they support

* A traditional 64 game tournament to be determined by Polls of the Day sometime in 2008. (the sooner it could happen the better, of course, but we understand that this is not SB's #1 priority)

* No division by era. (we've already determined that Mario 3 and Zelda 1 dominate the 8 bit era; the much more interesting question is how well they would hold up against modern competition)

* No gimmicks. (a standard 1v1 format, no removal of past champions, no limiting by era, no limitations on the nomination form)

I will keep a running tally of total signs and track who posted them for the duration of this topic (ie, until the Game Contest is announced).

In my next post I'll discuss why right now is the most ideal time for a new Game Contest we have seen in the past four years. Until then, let's get some signs going!

greatone, that's covered in the final statement, "no limitations on the nomination form." By which we mean, you can nominate whatever 10 games you want, even if they're all SNES, all 16-bit, all Square, etc etc.

Game Contest II - Why Now?

I stated earlier that this is the most ideal time for a Game Contest in many years. Here is why I feel that way:

* The last Game Contest kicked off on Friday, April 2nd, 2004. That's right, even though it doesn't seem possible, it's been more than four years since the last time games were in competition here on GameFAQs. Four years ago to the day, in fact, we had already advanced into the 16-bit portion of the bracket, and were watching Link to the Past put up 91% on Gunstar Heroes. We've seen that Character results can change drastically even over the course of a single off-season; imagine how much of a difference four years could have made!

* The most anticipated game in GameFAQs history was just released. Regardless of where you fall when it comes to the Brawl v Melee debate, every poll leading up to the game's release pointed toward it being the most-hyped we've ever witnessed. It outperformed Twilight Princess, Final Fantasy X, and everything else you could think of in those pre-release polls. Now, whether the game has lived up to that hype is a matter of debate- but we've debated that point too much already, it's time to put in a Contest environment and let it fend for itself!

* The Champion is once again in question. Is Final Fantasy VII still the crown jewel of GameFAQs? Many would still say yes, but between the overall Nintendo Boost we've been witnessing since 2005, Zelda's unexpected (at least on this board) defeat of Final Fantasy in 2006, and Link continuing to beat Cloud by larger and larger margins every Summer, others are of the opinion that a 2008 Game Contest would be OoT's to lose. Still others would make a case for Brawl as a potential darkhorse... even though those people are crazy, that doesn't detract from the fact that we would most likely witness our most closely-contested Final in history, both in terms of predictions and actual vote results.

* There have been dozens of well-loved, very interesting games released since '04. This is rather obvious, but still worth stating. Could Resident Evil 4 hang with the Contest heavyweights? Has Portal made enough of an impact to steal an opening round victory? Could a casual favorite like Guitar Hero or Wii Sports make some noise against a high ranked but somewhat cultish title?

* The 2004 format resulted in some huge snubs that could surprise us in '08. How far would you take Final Fantasy VIII to advance in a bracket? How about OoT's younger brother, MM? What kind of support would an influential classic like Mario 1 receive in the year 2008?

That's the best point, and I'd even argue that FF7 was never in question in the first contest. But now? Brawl or the two Zelda heavy-hitters have a chance.

HOWEVER, I feel that there should be some form of limitations to nominating. Handled in a better way than last time though. Instead of one per console, how about four or five per generation? That way it ensures that we'll have plenty of classic games throughout the contest, and it won't just be SMB3, CT, LttP, a couple of other Snes games, FFVII, OoT, and almost 60 games from the last three years.

Regarding the idea to limit nominations to 4 or 5 per era... while I agree that a wide open form where you can nom any 10 games you want would lead to the 8 and 16 bit eras probably only getting represented by, let's say,

where I have to disagree is that this would necessarily be a bad thing. If a game has stood the test of time, like the ones mentioned above, its going to have a good shoot at making it into a wide open field. If it has not, like countless others that weren't mentioned, then I'm not so sure we should be giving it an unfair advantage to help it make the cut.

If we nominate games by the generation, we'd end up getting more of the 8-bit games in the bracket than anything, since there's trillions of loved newer games these days. Keep that in mind.

I'd also like to see a 128-game contest... somehow. Maybe we could stick to traditional 64-game in the meantime, but doing a SC2K7-style game contest with 128 of them would be cool.

Since Haste has kind of brought us to the subject, here's the layout I would propose for future Contests.

Spring/Summer 2008: The Great Game Contest (64 games, 1v1s, etc)
Summer/Fall 2008: catch our breath (a little time off would do the Character Contest good, IMO)
Fall/Winter 2008: a silly mini-Contest (just to break up the offseason a little; maybe use the old Quote Contest nominations to slap together a bracket)

January 2009: Game of the Year Contest (a 16 game bracket to decide the GotY)
Spring 2009: Greatest Console Ever Contest (16 system mini tournament; next year seems like the best time for it, as the 360, Wii, and PS3 will all be in the prime of their lives)
Summer 2009: Character Battle VII (full 64 character no gimmick 1v1 tournament- should still be plenty exciting since it will have been nearly two years since we saw characters in action)

Summer 2010: 128 Game Contest (4 way battles to shake things up while giving a ton of worthy games a chance)

I completely agree, BTM, and like you saw on my schedule last page, I bet we could get a really interesting Contest if we moved to that format the next time around. For right now though, we know so little about Games that even a pure 1v1 format is bound to have a ton of exciting results and big surprises. For instance, think how great the FF7 v Ocarina final is going to be. Now imagine if, instead, we had to deal with a FF7 v Ocarina v Chrono Trigger v LttP final. See what I mean?

Well, like I said, I definitely agree that we'd have no problem getting together a field of 128 worthwhile titles, unlike the fodder-filled first round of Characters. The problem is, I don't think it would be possible to maintain user interest in a double-sized bracket. From the sense I get, everyone is really excited when a new bracket kicks off, and we ride high on that interest for a couple weeks, but then after just about a month contest fatigue starts to set in. But the good thing is, it never makes much of an impact because by then, hey, we're about to move into the second round!

Imagine that same feeling starting to set in, and then we look around and realize we're only halfway through the first round of this monster Contest. Seems to me like alot of people would just tune out for a while, maybe start paying attention again when it got down to the home stretch.

Eh, you can always count on the first round to deliver 4 or 5 of the better matches all season, but they're sandwiched between so many ho-hum squash matches that it leaves the quality pretty much few and far between. And don't get me started on those downright awful fodder vs fodder battles that sometimes spring up in R1! I mean, I see where you're coming from in that these days we're a little biased against the later rounds because Characters has been so done to death that we know it'll always be Sonic and Mega and Snake and Samus and Mario in that Elite Eight, but if you think back to the earlier Contests or consider it in terms of Games, people were/are sure to keep getting more and more hyped the further we advance in the bracket.

Hmm, yeah, 2002 for sure was better in the later rounds. But even by 2003 it was pretty boring in the later rounds except Link/Cloud. And last year was a fluke with the L-Block.

Although in this case, we have new games that can actually compete at a high level, unlike characters.

Either way, 128 or 64 I'd be okay with, though.

With bracket making and seeding done pretty much solely by nominations - no gimmicks. Company caps maybe, nothing else. Definitely no generation divisions - those are terrible, and make things much less interesting

Also series caps in addition to company caps are fine (though for some series, even a cap of 3 is too low).

Hoooray, a sign from creative! Now our rally can't fail! Also, this takes us up to 151 supporters.

I understand what you're saying Haste, but to me 4 way matches are like investing in excitement insurance. On the one hand, you're assured that no matter what happens on match day, there's going to be something at least moderately interesting to keep an eye on. You know Magus is going to win, but maybe there will be a good duel between PW and Bomberman for 2nd, or else maybe Crash will surprise and bring himself into contention. Or you know Link is going to win, but at least Vincent might be able to give Crono a fight for 2nd. Which is great in itself, but also sort of cheapens the overall affect. Vincent > Crono was good fun, but how much of that was the result of Crono getting gimped by Link and Zero? How much of Phoenix's great stand should we chalk up to Crash snatching BM's casual vote? Would either of those results happen in an actual match, without any outside interference?

That's why as much as I loved last Summer, none of the results ever had a chance to stand out in my mind the same way that Halo/StarCraft or LttP/CT or Mario/Cloud do.

That's a fair point, Smurfy. The first step in the process, as I saw it, was to find out if Board 8 was all on the same page regarding the upcoming Contest. It seemed like we were, from the sense I was getting, but I would look pretty silly going to SB/Site Suggestions saying "hey listen, we all want a new Game Contest!" only to find out that, in reality, half of B8 wanted Games and half wanted Characters. Or if half wanted the kind of Games contest I suggest in the first post, but the other half wished we would do some kind of twist (like keep the generational division, or remove FF7, or split the divisions into genres, or some other gimmick).

Now that we've determined that there is in fact this core base of support here on B8, we're in a much stronger position in terms of where we can go from here. We can either close this topic down and bring it to Suggestions, with 160 signatures already in place, or take it to SB directly through a feedback ticket, or just bring it up to moderators/admins close to SB who will be able to mention it to him, with some positive proof of our feelings they can easily link to.

Are you? Ever since Cloud beat Link in the Character Battle, Link has been growing farther apart from Cloud. If logic applies correctly then that'd make Zelda have a greater chance than in the last games contest. And TP is considered by many Zelda fans, the best behind OoT. Some even consider it better. So yeah, TP probably has a really good chance.

Regarding why I very much disagree that FF7 would be a lock over OoT this year...

2003 and early '04 were Square's time- Cloud upset Link, and FF7 took down Ocarina with relative ease. But let's take a look at what has happened since then, shall we?

2004: Link beats Cloud with 51.82% of the vote

2005: Link beats Cloud with 52.44% of the vote (up 0.62%)

2006: Link beats Cloud with 53.93% of the vote (up 1.49%)

2007: Link beats Cloud with 54.85% of the vote (up 0.92%)

So in other words, despite only one Zelda game coming out during that time, Link has improved by 3.03% on Cloud... and frankly I'd call that number conservative, as I feel Link was severely gimped by L-Block in their last meeting (Snake and Cloud have smaller but more concrete fanbases that help them look awesome in 4-ways, whereas Link is more of a 1v1 monster, when he can grab all the casual and old-school votes that were instead going to the Block in '07). Combine that growth with Zelda taking down Final Fantasy in '06 despite everybody calling us Zelda-supporters fools, and I would argue that you've got an excellent case for an Ocarina victory in '08.

It would also be worth noting that Link's past two years were not only the biggest increases over Cloud but also years that the Wii came out...which includes LoZ:TP, yes, but a far cheaper LoZ:OoT' VC-release too. With LoZ:OoT being the best-selling game on the VC to date (and will honestly likely stay that way for the Wii's life-span) and the Wii building more and more on ownership and popularity here, things look nice for LoZ:OoT nowadays in a rematch against FF7.

In FF7/Cloud's defense, Link looked more dominant compared to Cloud in the Battle Royale the previous year (excluding the Cloud/Link final) than the Clink/Snake-Block final the following year. Of course we can't say how accurate that really was.

Oh, and even though Link gained a few points on Cloud... that's still just below the gap that FF7 had over OoT. And, I'll take any Cloud/Link match in '06 or '07 with a grain of salt, as one was right around Zelda:TP's release, and the other was in a 4-way match. I'm just bringing up to everyone that nothing is decisive. Finally, as it's been said so much, Link's growth was probably mainly due to Zelda:TP. I'll say OoT's chances against FF7 are slim, but you never know.

Actually, I'd probably feel about as good taking SSBB over OoT as OoT over FF7. Keep in mind that using "lol" Sp2K4 x-stats, SSBM was expected to get 40.68% on OoT way back. Given that SSB popularity has skyrocketed since then, and SSBB has been meeting expectations (save Ulti), I'm seeing an easy 3rd place for SSBB amongst games, and something like a 47/53 match between it and OoT.

Whoo, we're halfway home!

I agree that Brawl has pretty much met expectations despite how huge the hype was, and 53/47 indirectly on Ocarina doesn't seem impossible. The trouble is, I'm think OoT is still going to be an SFF monster when it comes to anything else Nintendo... I mean, Goldeneye and Mario 64 are hugely popular games in their own right, and look how badly they wilted. SSB has shocked us before when it hung tough with the Mario series, but even knowing that, I still see it losing a few percentage points if it had to fight Ocarina directly.

2006 - Link-on-Cloud in Cloud/Link/Solid: 55.56%

Just relooking over it, here's some comparisons worth making:

--Link/Cloud/L-Block/Solid to Cloud/Link/Solid (54.85% to 55.56%)
--Cloud/Samus/Link/Seph to Cloud/Link/Mario/Seph/Solid (57.83% to 58.99%)
--Link/Cloud to any match except Cloud/Link/Mario/Samus/Seph/Solid (53.93% to 54.85%-64.3%)

I think this shows that L-Block probably hurt Link a bit but nothing major, Link compared better to Cloud (coupled with Seph) when Mario AND Solid shared the poll in 2006 than just Samus in 2007, and that their one-on-one projections likely overshot Link against Cloud every time except when there were two other Nintendo legends in the poll...

...now, that said after looking at these again, I think whatever boost Link may have gotten from the hype of Wii/LoZ:TP/VC-release of LoZ:OoT has stuck since then. Again, Link only barely went down when L-Block was in the picture for Link/Cloud/Solid and I imagine L-Block hurt Link the most (if anybody was hurt more). I also think Samus has a more independent fanbase from Link than Mario and we've seen that Solid -- while hindering Cloud more than Link -- doesn't hinder Cloud much.

In short, I'm beginning to disagree with Link beating Cloud noticeably worse last year one-on-one than 2k6...but I think there's little question that he would have done just as well. Then, nowadays, with SSBB out and the Wii ownership being so much higher, I would take Link to beat Cloud worse one-on-one than 2k6's match and it would probably be closest to what Link-on-Cloud in Link/Cloud/L-Block/Solid last year projects.

Relate this to LoZ:OoT/FF7 as you will.

Like N beat me to saying, SM64 (which I predict has a higher play-rate than LoZ:OoT) and Goldeneye crumbled around LoZ:OoT when facing it directly. We also saw SSB shock against SMB in the Series Contest, yes, but SSB is fortunate in a way that SMB didn't have to face LoZ in the championship...plus there was the old argument that SSB over-performed on SMB (or that SMB is unfairly popular in the contest) because many people consider SSB part of the SMB series. We also saw from the Top 100 List that there are still more GameFAQs users that are hardcore for LoZ:OoT here than SSBM.

SSBB will be more popular than SSBM one day if it isn't already, but SSBB has been out for like a month and a half. LoZ:OoT has been the #1 Nintendo game for almost ten years with multiple systems tapped AND was arguably the biggest game for emulation when it was first becoming popular (I remember EGM covering it!). We also know LoZ > SMB > SSB, and we know that SSB got 35% on SMB (pre-SSBB, during original hype for SSBB-trailor) and as for a LoZ/SMB match...

...it's old as hell and wouldn't be truly accurate one-on-one, but given what each series has done since 2001, there's no question that LoZ would still smash SMB (LoZ:TP > SMG, LoZ:WW > SMS, LoZ:PH > NSMB).

SSBB might be the game that ousts LoZ:OoT as the #1 game for Nintendo eventually, but it sure as hell isn't happening right now. I'm not taking it over LoZ:LttP right now, and I'm only just taking it over LoZ:TP.

Good points made. I failed to address Zelda:OoT being released on the VC... I think it means little. Those non-gamers who bought the Wii because it was different wouldn't care about the VC, and I've yet to see any proof of a re-release doing anything for a game's popularity. I'm thinking of Snake (MGS:TS) and Kefka (FF6A), especially. And, the fact that SSB held up well to SMB in the series contest could show that a strong Smash Bros. game could hold up to a strong Zelda game just fine... at least, I'd say if there's -any- Nintendo game that could hold up well to Zelda:OoT, it would be SSBB... if SMB3 could do it, I'm sure SSBB could. Just conjecture... anyway, believe it or not, the release date of OoT is closer to SMB3's than SSBB's... USA-wise, anyway.

My response to a Smurf post in Stats explains my thoughts on Games pretty well IMO, so I'll toss it here as well.

Very dull? Very? We must be talking about different Contests, because the Game Contest I saw featured four of the top ten matches of all time, arguably the single greatest match ever (CT/LttP), the most impressive underdog run in history (after adjusting for the four-way format with L-block), and some great twists and turns. (In five days we went from expecting an all-Zelda Final Four to seeing Zelda knocked out of the running in four consecutive matches.)

I'll give you that, despite the major highlights, a majority of the matches were dull. But do you know why? It was because the bracket was filled with bad fodder, first off, and secondly because the division into eras made the winner obvious with many older games. The good news is, the new Game Contest with an open nomination system won't have either of those problems!

The strongest games coming from a small number of elite series? Well, you're right there. But that's opposed to the strength of characters... how exactly?

Now, the one good point you did bring up is that games are going to be more static than characters, a little less likely to change over time. But what you again seem to be overlooking is that it's been four years. There's been a major shift in the voter pool, two times as many votes are going to be cast in this Contest, a huge number of quality games have come out in the last four years, PLUS there were enormous snubs from the last Contest that we know nothing about. The Game Contest x-stats weren't even very useful at the time, and they'll be completely meaningless now. Yes, Games are more static, but we have no idea what that static strength is. For anything.

Combine that growth with Zelda taking down Final Fantasy in '06 despite everybody calling us Zelda-supporters fools, and I would argue that you've got an excellent case for an Ocarina victory in '08.

That doesn't have much to do with Ocarina, though. That's just people's expectations being wrong. Not really something that's in favor of Zelda.

I think the 51-49 match between LoZ and FF would have been reversed if we had it when we had the BGE. It was a matter of demographics...and, speaking of which, the majority of the BGE had the poll in a lower position on the homepage which favors the more hardcore crowd. That would be something else FF7 would have to fight with in a rematch against LoZ:OoT.

I think that you're getting a little carried away that a slight change in poll position would make a difference.

That said, I can't wait to see games like God of War, Halo 3 and Guitar Hero 3 absolutely rip up the competition with their casual vote.

Am I exaggerating it BT? The poll had been in the standard position for the majority of the first round, and if memory serves me right it dropped a decent bit on the page between SC/KH and LoZ:WW/Skies of Arcadia. If this is right, there were only four matches after this point that reached 90,000+ votes (none of which broke 100,000+). Keep in mind that this change was almost immediately after Halo/Starcraft, EASILY the highest-drawing match in the BGE. There had already been fourteen matches with 90,000+ before the change and two with 100,000+ in the first round. There's no reasonable way to say FF7/Suikoden 2 should have gotten ~28,000 more votes than FF7/LoZ:OoT.

It obviously made a difference.

HaR is correct on this point. Sonic 2 vs Shining Force collected 97,000 votes under the old poll position. Know what also managed 97,000, once the poll was moved down on the page? Ocarina of Time vs Final Fantasy VII. No one can say how that might have affected the voting demographics, but it's very obvious that it took a major swipe out of the overall voting block.

There are a number of people who expect Ocarina to win in a rematch with FF7 today, and the reasoning for it is solid -- we've seen the Nintendo shift at GameFAQs. People's expectations in that series contest were that diversity was going to be a major factor. Final Fantasy had that diversity whereas Zelda didn't. It sounded good at the time, too -- but for all diversity could be a positive it had just as much a chance to be a negative.

You're trying to make a point that doesn't need to be made. The shift is evident, but that match is not proof of it. The victory for Zelda there was so slim it could have changed if you held it on a different day, and there was never anything that said Zelda had absolutely no shot to beat FF. It's a lot like the Link / Cloud point -- that doesn't show anything. A few months after FF7 beat Ocarina, Link went and beat down Cloud.

Ocarina is one game, a single game as old as FF7. Link is a character who keeps getting games, who keeps making an appearance in something every year. Zelda as a series is the same way. You can bring these things up, but they don't hold. There's no question that Ocarina has a great shot at winning a rematch, but the points you're making for it are pretty faulty.

You know, the more I think about it, the more this idea of "A series won't be much stronger than its strongest game" seems preposterous. It's basically like picking the most popular game from a series and saying the rest of it is worth virtually nothing.

Say if, for example, we combined Cloud and Squall into one entry. Would you really expect this not to be much stronger than just Cloud himself? I find that hard to believe because you're basically disregarding the 25% that prefer Squall over him. Put the two together, and you have a noticeably stronger force. I don't see why it's different for a series.

Leonhart, remember I gave that example on the Four Pack of Fun Board about diversity and stuff when I was talking about Metal Gear Solid? Two ends of a spectrum.

On one side of the spectrum, you have a series like Final Fantasy, where the fanbases between the games are diverse, so combining them as a series wil undoubtedly increase its strength over any singular game in the series, even one as popular as Final Fantasy VII.

On the other side of the spectrum, you have a series like Devil May Cry, where fans of one game in the series are probably fans of the other. Ignore a game like DMC2 that is actually disliked, as that is irrelevant in this example. So if you just consider DMC and DMC3, it's not like those games have separate fanbases. There's probably going to be a high amount of overlap with the most popular game in the series and the next game. So if you combine the games as a series, it's simply not going to be much stronger than it's most popular game, at least not compared to a series like FF.

So in the end, it all depends on how diverse and dedicated the fanbases are when it comes to the entire series. We don't know how much weight favorite games overall will have in voting. We don't know how quality vs. quantity will work, etc. But there will be some series that aren't going to be significantly stronger than their most popular games. That idea really isn't farfetched at all...

By being hardcore into Blizzard's big trio for six years now. Starcraft >= Diablo > Warcraft in America, though Diablo takes center stage whenever a new patch comes out. Worldwide, it's Starcraft >>> Warcraft >= Diablo.

Oh and in America, where GameFAQs is based from, Grand Theft Auto as a series trumps all of those. I'll be shocked if Warcraft even breaks 40% in that match, and it runs the danger of being Kerrigan v2.0.

Those are what I was talking about. It's reasoning that's easy to believe, but when you step back there's just as much room for it to backfire. Final Fantasy was unquestionably a more diverse series, but that diversity brings its own share of problems. People's opinions on FF are all over the place -- someone only like new, some only like old, some only like one or two. It's not going to stop it from being a powerhouse, and it almost didn't stop it from outright beating Zelda, but can stop damper its strength compared to the absurd expectations people had for it.

The series contest was fairly ridiculous to begin with, though. There were three series and everything else. It was a contest we won't see again and doesn't have any use outside of a minor bullet point on 'why Ocarina might beat FF7 in a rematch.' There's plenty of good reasons one can come up with for why it would happen, but the series contest ranks as one of the worst -- right next to Link / Cloud matches.

Oh, and for the record: four years ago from today (which is currently 4/30/2008 for us on the East Coast!), we saw Half-Life get 44% on Metroid Prime...now that Half-Life 2 is out, I bet it could compete with MP even better. It could also be interesting to see how MP2 or MP3 could compare as well.

Also, four years from yesterday (talking about 4/29/2004) had us see LoZ:WW thrash Skies of Arcadia, then before that we saw Kingdom Hearts barely oust Soul Calibur (4/28/2004)...and the day before THAT was the start of the legendary 128-Division. You guys remember the match that started that crazy mess: Halo/Starcraft on 4/27/2004!

To think, Halo's had two games released since then that we could see in a contest, and since BGE in 2004 Starcraft has finally had a sequel announced for it. SC's had two or three games released, KH2 has come out, LoZ:WW is no longer the newest LoZ now that Twilight Princess is out, and SoA is old news.

Man, things change a lot in four years...right SB?

Nominations are generally about 2 weeks, then a little over a week for sending brackets, then a few days to set the bracket in stone.

A new Contest starting in July would be fine, and seems likely enough; we're just hoping to see it sooner in order to catch Brawl and GTA4 at their peaks.

In case you haven't seen the new Sballin' post yet, SB confirms that there are a couple new features and possibly some big news being announced next week (aka starting Tuesday, as he won't be doing any site work on Monday). The new features are probably the two things we've been beta testing for the last few weeks, so just because he's unveiling something doesn't mean it's the next Contest for sure...

HOWEVER, he also states that Ask GameFAQs will definitely be making its return later next week. So fire up those Contest-question-asking fingers, friends!

Remember gang, here is the schedule that will be set in place as soon as you elect me Contest Administrator.

Spring/Summer 2008: The Great Game Contest (64 games, 1v1s, etc)
Summer/Fall 2008: catch our breath (a little time off would do the Character Contest good, IMO)
Fall/Winter 2008: a silly mini-Contest (just to break up the offseason a little; maybe use the old Quote Contest nominations to slap together a bracket)

January 2009: Game of the Year Contest (a 16 game bracket to decide the GotY)
Spring 2009: Greatest Console Ever Contest (16 system mini tournament; next year seems like the best time for it, as the 360, Wii, and PS3 will all be in the prime of their lives)
Summer 2009: Character Battle VII (full 64 character no gimmick 1v1 tournament- should still be plenty exciting since it will have been nearly two years since we saw characters in action)

January 2010: Game of the Year Contest (this will be an annual event)
Summer 2010: 128 Game Contest (4 way battles to shake things up while giving a ton of worthy games a chance)

I wouldn't be opposed to spicing up the dead of Winter with silly mini-Contests. I'm talking quick little 16-man tournies, no prizes, nothing "official", just a fun way to break up the offseason some. Something like the top 16 nominated Quotes would work well there, but we could certainly expand into a territory like Favorite (non-gaming) Fictional Character. That bracket could have, let's say... Batman, Spiderman, Darth Vader, Yoda, James Bond, Wolverine. Should be pretty wildly unpredictable, I'd say!
