I keep getting sig'd for the weirdest things lately - StW

I used to read them back when they hadn't even reached 100 yet, back when I used to go to RI every now and then, when guys like Strata9976 were there. They were actually interesting. I checked again a few months ago and they were at 500, and I wasn't understanding anything anyone was talking about. Now they've tripled that. O_o And yes, it's mostly flooding now.

And how about that 4145 topic on LUE? "Every 20th poster gets 5 dollars via Paypal," or something like that, and he happened to make that topic when the post limit function was broken. XD

16/40 - recognized Squall when his picture was shown.(14 male, 2 female). Yes the same 2 females obviously. Duh. The rest of the females who were shown his pic immediately lit up. Yes, I'm not kidding. Should this have been expected? Somewhat but wait until you see the results later on...
14/40 - recognized Squall to be from the Final Fantasy series or from Final Fantasy VIII.
10/40 - recognized Squall to be only from Final Fantasy VIII.
2/40 - made some wisecrack about Squall being a storm of wind.
11/40 - people picked Squall as their favorite character. 9, yes 9 of them were females and nearly every single one made some comment about him. Man it started getting very weird at times. Aaron and Josh were just as shocked as I was. It seems that Mr. Leonhart is very popular with the ladies. If he were real, this guy would get more action than all Gamefaqs users combined. Also, 2 females who had previously voted a favorite earlier wanted to switch their pick later on to Squall after giving it some thought, which would have raised his favorite vote total by females to 11 but I didn't let them. The madness had to be contained.

CHRONS TAKE:

Well, what to say of Squall. I mean wow. After the insanity ended and all was said and done, yes we were still standing but it was intense. Squall, on name recognition and pic recognition alone, didn't fare close to the FFVII boys but man oh man, did it get out of control in the favorites department and when his pic was simply shown to the women. I can't even begin to count all the numerous comments made about his looks and what a shame it was that he wasn't real and etc. etc. etc. We lost track by then and were simply swarmed by rabid women wanting to know more of Mr. Leonhart. Even older women took an interest and one woman was in front of her husband and began to take interest. The poor guy looked devastated that he was losing to a video game character. As for the guys, only two did end up picking him as their favorite because they simply thought he was cool. The women were an entirely different story. I ended up showing two pics of Squall after I had collected the data for him just to see where he stood with the ladies overall and what kinds of reactions I would get.

I always thought Samus's time was next year and still do. I think she will be at about Sephiroth's level this year or maybe a little under.

I think Metroid Prime 2 will have a much greater effect on her than AC on Cloud. If Zelda gets delayed, I see her as atleast second-favorite behind Cloud.

Look at them more closely. Link is easily countering/block Crono's attack and Crono's facial expression makes it look like he is struggling. Links looks like he isn't even trying.

I'm biased, but that's how I look at it.

Link is doing alright. About 3% below what he'd be expected to get against Crono last year. And he should go up a bit during the day, going by the Mario match.

It depends on whether you think Crono is stronger this year, or if Mario fell. But Link doesn't look unbeatable by any means (barring a very large day vote increase).

... And I thought from the way people were talking about Crono's night vote that he might lead for half an hour. ^_^;

It was still an improvement over Link's hammering of Mario the previous year. I think a final match as close as Cloud vs. Seph is probably the best we can expect, though it would be great if we could have something that came as close as Frog/MC.

This one kinda nullifies the whole revenge vote theory from last year, unless it's happening in reverse this year. At any rate, this also shows that Link hasn't yet gotten to the point where he's a certainty to win. I'd say that only Cloud and/or Seph, though Seph has been looking more and more doubtful, have a chance to beat Link, Megaman has been looking stronger but he's not this strong.

God good. Not quite the 53/47 I was expecting. Now, I will admit I was dead wrong on how this breaks out, but I still do not concede that there was no SFF in Link/Mario. Some of us have been around for nearly 70... I missed the first two... and can assure you that no matter how many potential scenarios there are certain people won't buy it until the evidence is added up and it'd clearly there.

Also, Slow, if Crono didn't increase but 2% and there was also about 2% SFF between Link/Mario then there's no reason that Link should have to increase by that much just to maintain an expected result.

Looks like this match is a dud after all.

The result follows last year's X-stats to within .5%, and the vote totals will get nowhere near the 100k I had hoped for.

I'm trying my best to avoid SFF matches :P It's easier to do in a N/S/E/W type scenario than it is with the way CjayC set things up this year. A scenario like that just screams SFF matches.

Personally, I'm leaning towards Crono increasing because of his overperformance against Conker being very accurate in predicting his percentage against Mario.

But his overperformance was pretty small, so that could've just been a fluke and we couldn't tell whether Mario underperformed or not because we only saw him with a new character and a SFF match...

I'm not too sure what to think of this right now. But Link has just equalled his percentage against Mario in 2002 (62.53%). =)

Oh man. I checked the polls this moring, Link was owning.

Link is still going. This is not good for Crono or Mario. Crono will now probably end up far below Clinkeroth and possibly Mega Man and Samus. Mario even farther down, possibly ending up with Snake and Sonic. This also doesn't look good for Mega or Cloud. Link is....looking pretty strong. He beat Mario with 62.5% NO SFF. Mario = Crono, but still, this result is a little surprising. I mean, there had to be Nintendo SFF, but I guess there wasn't. I still got faith in Cloud, but Link is looking like he can win.

Remember that poll? It happened last year. Mega Man beat Snake 53.5 to 46.5. It’s only happened ONCE in a repeated match, that the person who didn’t win the first time, won the second time, and that was Crono/Mario. This is not as close and controversial as the Crono/Mario matches were. Besides, Mega has looked like he has increased this year (well, at least from his match against Tidus) while Snake isn’t looking to hot. Maybe his opponents are tough? Maybe Frog and Knuckles are that strong, or Snake is weaker? And with Mega Man, was his match against Tidus a fluke, and is Zero really that strong? Has Mega really increased enough to take out Link? So many questions we want answered…hopefully this match will answer them all.

Oh boy, here we go. This match should be awesome. Mega Man couldn't even win against a SFF contender in Zero. Snake couldn't even hold off Frog, who narrowly defeated both Liquid Snake and Master Chief. They've both sucked equally, and that's where it all gets interesting. Trying to figure out whether Zero or Frog would win in a match would be a really good idea to help with this, but unfortunately, I can't think of who would win. I want to say "Mega Man will win because he sucked less in the last match". But that little bit more that Mega Man won over Zero than Snake did over Frog could have just been the SFF vote. That's saying something, guys. But here's the thing. Mega Man and Solid Snake is a completely new match with different fanbases. I can't judge how they'll do against each other, since it's never happened before. Frog may have had 48% on Snake, but that doesn't mean Frog's fanbase is Mega Man's. This match could be really close, but it could also fool a lot of people. I'm gonna give the edge to Mega Man, I think, because he's getting so much more support.

This is getting ridiculous. I mean, I knew Crono had zero chance to win this match from the result of the CT/LttP battle from Spring. Crono garners all of his support from CT, whereas LttP is not even the best game in Link's series. So if CT could barely oust LttP, and XS says it could not oust OoT, then Crono would be unable to hang with Link. However, 63/37??? Unbelievable. He did do decently during the night - there were some 10 - 12 minute periods where he went 50-50 or was even winning the update, but Link surged ahead in the last three to five minutes to get at least around 54% for that update.

lol, jk, but Megaman increasing that much? Perhaps Tidues was the exception, not the norm, because the stats did predict nicely zero/megaman, and that could even have had some sff in it. Mega's had one extreme match, with Tidus, but then a somewhat average one with zero, so to state the obvious, tomorrow will tell. I'm not expecting too much from megaman myself, I am much happier to believe that frog/mc/ls are just that good.

Yeah, status has helped characters maintain whatever they've got.

Characters who are/were extremely well-known have a status yet they fall below those "without status". I just find it stupid to say it's "wrong" for a character to fall below another just because of their "status"; for example, Mario being weaker than Link could be called "wrong" but it isn't.

And I'm all for Snake not dropping, as I don't think he has reason too. Plus it makes Frog look that much better.

Mario getting reverse-SFF on Link? I doubt it very much. Mario's 2003 numbers don't point to that in any way - unless of course, you think Sephiroth OVERperformed against Cloud, and many an occurence in the early rounds point to it not being true.

But on to another subject... Cloud's track record with the board vote has been downright horrid so far. Duke stayed above 30% for 2 minutes, Vyse stayed there for FOUR minutes, and it took 15 minutes for Cloud to double Squall. Meanwhile, although Sly DID stay above 20% for five minutes against Sephiroth, he held his own against Vivi and Auron, whom the board likes very much.

My question is this, do you think Sephiroth could blow out Cloud in the opening minutes of their match?

It's a match where we spent hundreds of posts on and couldn't come up with one decent scenario for Mega Man/Zero/Tidus. If anything considering how it was a SFF match with no single explanation I like to think of it as the exception. Tomorrow should back me up wonderfully on that.

But I predict that now the board vote will be a mix of that, and "hey, a close match, I'd better support my pick - cloud!"

.. Which in my opinion would effectively tone down the poorer performance by Cloud in the opening minues.


However, while I do think that Seph will lead early, it'll turn to be a slow gain in % by Cloud to a comfortable, solid victory.

Those stats say that's it's hard to pinpoint what Mega Man needs because we don't really know where Snake sits. I can pretty much guarantee he won't make top 10, though. Well at 14:29:45, Link vs. Crono and Link vs. Yoshi were 6,601 votes apart with Link vs. Yoshi in the lead.

Since then, however, Link vs. Crono has caught up some and the difference was at 5,197 at 15:29:45.

It's been catching up by 300 - 380 votes per update, by the way.

That's the thing. I, for one, was not convinced that Cloud would win a rematch with Link or that Link would win a rematch with Cloud. It was a complete toss-up in my mind. In the end, I'm not sure why I picked Link, but I did. And if I would've picked Cloud, I would have been just as confident in Cloud winning as I am currently of Link winning.

Over 63%...that's just unreal. If Link didn't increase, I don't know WHAT happened. Link shouldn't have gotten much more than 59%, no question. And no, this can't be explained by random variation. The heavyweights have shown to be very constant in how they perform.

Combine that with a supposed decrease for Cloud and Sephiroth (judging by Sephiroth, I'd bet they both fell), Link just might be unstoppable again. That's excluding Mega Man and Samus of course...I won't comment on them.

What do you think the prediction percentage will be? It was around 72% for Link to take his division last year...with both Crono and Mario in this division, do you think it may be lower than 72%? Or do you think the brackets will be insanely accurate once again?

First off, I don't see why Sephiroth falling would mean Cloud would also fall. Secondly, Sephiroth hasn't performed terribly he just isn't in any position to actually win this contest. I wouldn't call that "showing weakness" in the grand scheme of things. I'd just say it killed his shot at actually winning. He did perform pretty much like he was suppose to against Vivi with no SFF. Unless he used SFF to get to that projection.

Cloud and Sephiroth aren't joined at the hip. They're capable of increasing and decreasing independently, though neither have shown signs of doing either one.

And what's with all the pro-Cloud rants I've been hearing from you now? What a major turnaround from the beginning of the Summer.

I never banked on Link getting weaker in order for Mega Man to win, although it would've been nice to see him do such. Right now he's about at the level of Cloud and it wasn't like I planned to see Mega Man stop in the finals. This match doesn't affect me one way or another for how Mega Man will do in the semi-finals.



Oh and like I said, I've always liked Cloud, never had any anti-Cloud sentiment.

I personally believe Mario has been dropping slightly over the years.

IMO, Mario was at his strongest in 2002, when SMS has just came out, but was SFF'd by Link making him look weaker than he really is.

When SMS flopped, Mario begin to slowly decrease over the years, allowing Crono to win easily over him.

Under the assumptions mentioned above, some things make more sense:
1. Crono "tied" Mario with 3000 cheat votes in 2002, he did it again without much cheating in 2003.
2. Cloud won't need as big of a jump between 2002 and 2003.
3. Samus doesn't have to increase massively this year compared to 2003, she was simply SFF'd by Link.

I think Sigma and Bass would do far better than their seeds would suggest.

It's a very competitive bracket. I wouldn't be surprised if everybody with a seed of 14 and up could break 20% on Link. With that said, there aren't any openings higher up, and I tended to seed characters I know slightly better than characters I don't.

Hm...interesting point on 2002 Mario being the strongest...so, if Mario was at, say, 39%, Crono was at 38% due to the extra proxy votes, and Cloud was at 40% due to PGC...that makes sense somewhat. It at least makes better sense of some of the matching of extrapolations between years. I know it sounds miniscule, but it could be significant...

I remember Slowflake suggested that there might've been MASSIVE PGC-influence due to Tails and Alucard appearing to be very underrated in 2002, but it was probably more of a combination of Mario being stronger, PGC, AND a little Mario/Link SFF...just an idea.

In fact, creativename said that if Mario was equal to about 39% on Link in 2002, that the extrapolations between the 2002 North/East characters and those same characters in 2003 match the best...even though he claimed that it meant nothing, I don't care. :P

Hey, creative (or someone else...RPGuy or somebody), if you have time, would you mind doing some plotting/least-squares/whatever of the 2002 West, and then calculating the best value for Sephiroth against Link? If you'd like...I don't think I'd know how to work least-squares backwards and stuff, and I have no decent calculator. o_O
