well, Kuja isn't exactly the greatest character ever, but compared to Kefka, Sephiroth, Kefka, Exdeath and others, he wins.

Golbez is probably the best of all of them. I remember someone telling me the big spoiler concerning Golbez back in like 1991. that was so not cool.

--- Grim Fandango spoilers ----

Manny is a travel agent for the dead. When you die, you need a travel agent to get across the Land of the Dead trying to reach the place of eternal rest. Manny believes he is purposely not getting good clients, so he cheats the system and gets one. Turns out it isnt he cant get good clients but he isnt able to give them good deals because of some higher power. He sends a nun of a woman in Meche to travel the Land of the Dead on foot. He gets in trouble trying to cheat the system and is to be killed by Domino, another travel agent who apparently works for the mob. A rebel leader helps Manny escape and asks Manny a few favors. Manny does them and then heads out with his driver through the land of the dead

--- Spoilers end ---

Thats a VERY brief synopsis of the first disk. As for Manny he is a wisecracking, no-nonsense grim reaper. He puts on a hard shell, but has a soft, tasty core. Also he is apparently a lightweight drinker.

Some quotes for the road all from Manny:

"You cant hide from the Grim Reaper. Especially when he's got a gun."

"I just locked an open door.... strange, yet symbolically compelling."

"I bet Hector pauses here every day, and thinks to himself, "Boy, I wish I could see past my gut and enjoy my expensive monogrammed floor."

"Labor Organization and Revolt... Made Easy. Chapter One: The workers shall control the means of production...

Oooh, better not show this to Glottis."

"Hey, come on! You gotta let me back in! I'M A VIP!" - Glottis
"Does that stand for Very Inebriated Pianist?" - Manny

There are MANY, MANY more quotes, many from other characters. Grim Fandango is seriously the most quotable game this side of Star Fox 64.

No. Godfather Part III didnt happen. Chrono Cross didnt happen. Pink Floyd after Roger Waters didnt happen.

Final Fantasy IX is a vivid (since I just replayed it) and rather pleasing memory.

FF9 seems to have a huge split here - people either love it or hate it. the only RPG that's more love-hate here is xenosaga.

I think the more polarizing game within the series is VIII. Sensible people such as myself hate it with a fiery passion, but Leonhart can't get enough of it and it is currently HM's flavor of the month. Go figure.

no, Earthbound has a bunch of fans that say it's the best game ever and a bunch of people who get annoyed at the fans who say it's the best game ever. Xenosaga, on the other hand, people call boring, annoying, pretentious, sleep-inducing, and everything inbetween. the fans of Xenosaga can't even fight back because their game gets brutalized so bad.

Not really, he has guns at some point in the game but its more you use items on other items to create actions which further your goals.

Anyways, I'm with HM and LH when it comes to FF8. I thought it was a great game, as long as you didn't pay much attention to the storyline starting with the worst spoiler ever on Disc 2.

I like to think that while FFIX is love-hate, FFVIII is widely accepted as a horrible, disappointing mistake with a few people who enjoy it, but don't defend it. Earthbound is generally seen as slightly above average and humorous with several fans who praise it, which then causes others to be disillusioned and annoyed. Really, the only people you hear complaining (though there aren't that many) are those who heard it was good by those who discovered it themselves, but aren't interested in humorous RPGs (thus the reason they probably didn't play it sooner). Xenosaga is the worst scenario. It is extremely intriguing with a simplistic yet addictive battle system (at least the first one, that is), but when anyone who does not typically enjoy RPGs plays it, Xenosaga enrages them. Xenosaga has endured countless "nice movie" comments. Adjusting to the number of people who have played the game, it is probably the single most insulted game in one aspect. It embodies the division between those with an interest in RPGs/story and those who just want shooters/mindless action games. Of course, there are those who just can't take so much story, but they don't account for as much. With FFVIII, even those who derive enjoyment from it don't really love it except for just a few...

I wrote quite a lot here O_o

FF8 is a mixed bag, there are those that hate it, those that find it disappointing and others who think of it as a highlight of the series.

FF9 on the other hand, is really not talked about. I can't explain why, I liked it, but it seems like it just fell off the face of the Earth in the minds of RPG fans.

I guess I don't fit anywhere then according to that long post. Final Fantasy IX is my second favorite FF game, behind FFVI. And I like FFVII about as much as the other two. Like I said, after that, there is a significant drop off. HOWEVER, I DO like FFVIII a hell of a lot more than FFX. I actually had fun somewhat playing FFVIII, so gameplay-wise, it's okay. It's just the other stuff about it that causes me to like it far less than my top 3. FFX was just one big borefest to me. Nothing about that game made me WANT to play it. I just wanted to beat it so I could get it over with. So as it looks, I'm probably in the minority in this topic in regards to FF tastes.

I have no problems with the Earthbound fanbase. I just found the game incredibly boring. Same for Xenosaga, which was dissapointing because I'm a HUGE fan of Xenogears. I could go on about the good qualities of Xenogears just as well as Lucid can for Earthbound.

I guess if a game isn't fun for me to play, it lessens all the rest of the good qualities. Gameplay is the first thing I look for in a game. It's why Mario & Luigi is my favorite of the Mario RPGs. It's a BIG reason why I like FFVII. Final Fantasy VI is the oddball because it's gameplay is nothing special. But back when I first played it on SNES, I became so attached to it that it stuck. The music, story, and characters easily make up for it's gameplay. Same for IX, even though the characters aren't as memorable. It has better gameplay though, so it evens out.

I don't understand the hate for FFVII and FFIX. They were both pretty good games in my eye, just nowhere near as amazing as FFVI, FFIV, and FFVII were. They did have several notable flaws, but I would never call them bad games.

Final Fantasy IX is by far my favorite Final Fantast title, but Final Fantasy VIII is my second favorite. Aside from those two, Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, and X are all excellent, as well. I disliked Final Fantasy V, and I have never played the first two. Final Fantasy X-2 is horrid, but the battle system is actually fairly cool, and it acts as the partial redeeming feature of the game.

The only Final Fantasy title I simply detest is Final Fantasy Tactics. I know, just shoot me.

I thought FFV had the best battles of any of the Final Fantasies by a longshot (excluding FFT)...they're just so fun. Bah. The boss battles as a whole of the other FFs can't compare to those in FFV... I mean, take for instance, the final battle against Ex-Death. Stone+OHKO at the same time? That's just awesome. ;)

*shoots you*

Anyway... I'm surprised at the number of people who hate FFV. A while ago, I bought FFAnthologies and then FFChronicles. I loved FFVI and FFV was very appealing (the job system is the best). When I played FFIV, though, I was very quickly turned off. I just hate having so many party members and everything seemed so generic and boring. I liked it more as the game progressed, but (likely because of the rather high difficulty and the annoyance of leveling up)
I just stopped after getting somewhere around rejoining adult Rydia (I really can't remember...). Now, I'm not saying it's a bad game, but I really don't understand why so many people love it compared to all this FFV hate.

You'd better not be the second coming of Inviso. And by that, she hates FFT with a passion but I recently discovered that she got stuck on the Mandalia Plains plot battle and quit after dying 7 times.

No wonder she prefers FFTA. You probably couldn't die in that game even if you attacked your own characters. Assuming you're willing to spend the two hours that it takes to clear a battle, that is.

Well, MGS3 did have the best ending and the best single boss fight (The End). Didn't think about those.

Bleh. Metal Gear Solid.

I thought the Final Fantasy/RPG argument was rather dull, myself.

The End may have been an awesome boss fight, but nothing can match the atmospheric irony of Naked Snake vs The Boss and the thematic climax of Solid Snake vs Liquid Snake.

And, now, I shall plague this topic with the bliss of Metal Gear. Excuse me while I search my documents for the countless substance on the best series of all time.

MGS > MGS3 > MGS2

Havent played MGS2 since my first playthrough, which might totally void my opinion.

We're talking about Metal Gear Solid here, not the best series of all-time.

I think that MGS had the best boss fights, as well as the best story/atmosphere. MGS3 had the best non-boss fight gameply. Unlike the other two if you were seen, you didnt have to run and hide. In 3 you can fight off everyone in the room, and you will lose your alert. In 1 and 2m if you decide to fight, the enemy will just keep coming and coming until you die or hide.

MGS2 didnt have anything on the other two im afraid...

So, yeah, while we are on the subject, how about a little Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty synopsis?

The End sucked. The Sorrow was a waste of time. The Fear was.. A joke character. The Pain was....Not real, ity was all a cruel joke.

The only good Cobras were The Fury and The Boss. Oh, and The Ladder.
