Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 546

By the way, this is pretty good evidence that "Random Piece of Final Fantasy VII Furniture" would kick ass in this format. It's only disadvantage is the traditional anti-vote that FFVII always carried as baggage, but seriously, you've got to be a very petty person to anti-vote that on the FFVII basis as opposed to, say, the joke basis.

Winning the contest exhausted L, being jumped by a paddle, cube, and block has really hurt.

By the way, this is pretty good evidence that "Random Piece of Final Fantasy VII Furniture" would kick ass in this format.

It would mostly be relying on the name. I've said this before, but not only does this type of joke entrant have come from a "universal" type game, but it has to have *prominence*. ? block is one of the most prominent things of the whole NES and SNES era, and was in Mario 64 too.

Random piece of FF7 furniture would get like no votes at all if "Final Fantasy 7" wasn't in the poll option.

Not just anything can make a popular joke entrant.

Obviously nobody expected this out of L-Block...but there were plenty of people who've said for years that L-Block would be midcard/lower midcard level based on Tetris prominence.

Man, random piece of FFVII furniture is not iconic, though.

The companion cube is lovable, the ? Block is the soul of Mario.

You want an example of some non-iconic thing? Check out how the paddle is doing.

L-Block looking real shaky in this match. Clearly fickle GameFAQs base has turned on their god.

Man I can't stand bandwagoners, the worst type of fan I have to say. Seems like L-Block fans are just 90's Bulls/Cowoys type fans.

L-Block Rocks (and so does ? block)

Bandwagoners suck

"Random piece of FF7 furniture" would do very very well if it were called just that I think- the phrase "random piece" is extremely important.

Actually I was actually going to call L-Block fans 90's Bulls/Cowboys type fans, so today isn't exactly surprising.

Also yes, having "Random" in the name would be a big plus.

I remembered it happened a few of times in 2002/2003 contest. Two of them were 2002 Mario vs Cloud and 2002 Sonic vs Samus match IIRC. Maybe also Mario/Crono II.

Again, the presence of "game" in the URL of the site doesn't change the fact that characters contest are the premium contests here, and games contests are mainly a change-of-pace (albeit a very exciting one). I really don't see how one argue this.

The only reason the character contest is the premier contest is that CJayC decided that it should be - it doesn't in any way reflect the will of the voters as far as I know. Personally I think people tend to care more about their favorite games than their favorite characters. While characters can be cool, a great game is an experience and an actual part of your life. I think this fact was reflected in the excitement that contest generated, as well.

Series would be a bigger draw than games first time around, and IIRC it was a bigger draw relative to site traffic.

I disagree with you there for a few reasons. One, there are many fewer notable series than games. Second, a series is a much more nebulous concept. When you think of a specific game, you can remember how you felt about playing it and if you really loved it you're going to vote for it instantly. When you think about a series, you're more likely to think something like "well... Link to the Past was awesome, but Majora's Mask was kind of a disappointment... but then on the other hand, FF X-2 was the worst game I've ever played... but I did really love FF VI... I'm not really sure which series I like better *votes arbitrarily*"
