Tidus level doesn't mean as much as it used to.
Heck somehow I think Snow will end up stronger than lightning cos he's a dude, though looking at the compilation as a whole Noctis might be the strongest of all.

As someone who predicted WCC to beat the hell out of those three scrubs in Round 1, I know that. I don't have much faith in the FF13 characters, though I can't imagine them being FF12-weak either. I don't expect FF13 to be the next FF10, though.

I miss sprite rounds and other round-pic themes. Watching Snake being held close by Frog and almost losing to Bowser was hilarious, as was some of the ugly-ass pics as a result.

I'm surprised people have any faith in FF13 characters given how terribad the FF12 characters were. I'm sure they'll all comfortably beat Balthier and maybe even Tidus, but after next year they'll be reduced to turbofodder.

Nobody really knows exactly what to expect from FFXIII, but you still want to see what new characters from a major franchise will do.

FFXIII just screams back to what they know best though.
FFXII was billed as a back to it's roots game but was missing so many hallmarks of the franchise from the classic summons to the new combat system, even the setting wasn't that old school, archadia looked too damn modern.
The XIII cast has been much more prominent in the trailers and it looks like events won't be upstaging them and you get what an extra 5 maybe 8k votes from possible new 360 fans?
If the characters are FFIX strong I'll consider it a moderate success, Vivi is no slouch and that kind of level means the midcarder battles would often be tight and tough to predict.

Just throwing this out there: I think it's weird to nominate characters who don't have a game out yet. I say this having nominated two characters I'm not personally familiar with (though that's due to the Guru and trading)...but it still feels impatient.

but the game will probably be out by the time contest starts and if lightning is in the lower half of the bracket it might coincide dead on with the release of the game, not to mention a lot of people are going to import.

It's not just Sackboy -- EC decided the Gurus should support Altair before his game was released (even though AC was out by nomination-time, the principle is similar), and now we're discussing FF13-characters and Bayonetta because the games will probably release between the bracket's release and their matches.

I'm not entirely against this new trend, but it certainly strikes me as odd and impatient. It's not like we've not seen characters get new games in contests before anyway -- Mario > Cloud and MC-2007 come to mind. Sure, seeing a character get their first game in the middle of a contest-run may be interesting in a way, but I don't really care to see characters without games anyway.

I know we don't have a lot of great newcomers, but yeesh.

it is an indictment of new characters, yeah. I don't really think it's that odd though. hell, Lightning right now has more discernible personality than a lot of things being championed (Charizard, Prinny, I could go on), so I'd argue that her inclusion is a good thing, not a bad one. I know that half of the appeal of bracketmakers in this topic revolves around having something concrete to go on, but I like that unpredictability.

also, Bayonetta will definitely have her game out by the time the contest starts, so if that's your holdup, she's not in that class.

ZFS | Posted 11/23/2009 11:06:28 AM | message detail
I don't think it's that bad. The best time to see any character is when their game is fresh in people's minds, and all the ones people are nominating have games that will either be out or coming out when the contest starts. No sense in waiting a year when you can potentially get them in now, especially if it means scraping the bottom of the barrel for yet another Nintendo or FF7 character instead.

it'd have to be after the GOTY polls, and those lasted until.. January 16 last year. assuming the contest starts the very next day, there would still be time for Lightning if she's in the back half of the bracket. and if she wins a round based purely on hype and bad bracket placement, her game will definitely be out.

Bayonetta's a lock.

Due to the time of the year and the timing of GameSpot's pretty similar contest, it simply doesn't make sense to do the CB until the beginning of next year (that is, beginning the battles in mid-January)

Who knows if that's his real schedule though.

What yo said, especially since SB just got quoted for aiming to start matches in mid-January and made the Character Battle no longer be an annual tradition. Starting any later than January would be a poor unenthusiastic move by SB.

I'm cooler with Bayonetta being nominated than the FF13-crew because of that...I guess it's not a big deal, but it's still unusual to me. =/

I don't think SBAllen is that concerned with maintaining the integrity of GameFAQs contests, so him delaying it to February or whatever wouldn't surprise or even bother me.

Nominating characters whose games haven't come out yet? Meh. Seems like a waste of a nomination to me since their strength would be pure hype, in which case you'd might as well just nominate a few more Brawl characters instead.

I could understand it being weird if there was a bunch of good new characters still left to get into the contest, but when most of the discussion in the stats topic so far has been where Cid ranks in the long list of FF7 characters, or how good or bad the main dude from Pokemon will be, just about anything will be preferable, at least to me. Someone fueled by hype creates a lot more interesting matches than most.

Although I kinda doubt either Lightning or Bayonetta get into the contest. There's not much of a push for them on the board, from what I've seen, and I don't know how much support they'd get on site-wide nominations.

Just a question out of curiosity: What are some rematches that you think would result in a different winner? Things like a Cloud/Mario rematch would obviously turn out differently (or would it...? DUN DUN DUN), but what about matches like Luigi/Yoshi? Sonic/Vincent? Jill/Peach? Dante/Yoshi? Sora/Mega Man? Crono/Auron?

Personally, I think Ganondorf and Bowser were way overrated in 2005 (and I don't think many would argue the point now, but I'm just stating it). I don't think we can take any of their matches in the Summer Contest that year seriously. What they've been from 2006 on is probably more accurate. Bowser in particular has looked bad the last three contests.

I personally blame Bowser's decline on the fact that he's been pretty much a joke since SMS until Galaxy came out, and it's a bit late to regain respect. Unless Bowser's Inside Story sold big.

And I'd probably end up taking Luigi over Ganondorf these days.

Dissidia amounts to pretty much nothing, but I'd say Squall has always > Vincent, we've just yet to see them go head to head.

After the egg Yoshi laid (lol) last year, I'd say Dante is the clear winner.

In Bowser's defense, he was against Luigi last year which SFF made him look bad.

And if you want to go further, Bowser was LFF'ed in both rounds in R2. R1 in Mewtwo and Toad (and Mewtwo isn't part of the SMB franchise hence why he got very close to Bowser). R2 in Shadow, not to mention Ryu got the bandwagon factor at this point since he already had beat Bowser the round before.

Yeah but that was a close match that could have gone either way, and FF7 doesn't have a day vote to bail itself out anymore. The characters and game are still clearly a cut above everything else, but they've lost that close match clutch.
