Exactly. Wii is a total joke console on this site now. Who would have thought that a console with one (soon to be two) legit Zeldas, two legit Metroids, two incredible Marios, and a Smash game could have been so weak. The GameCube would have never done so poorly in any poll. It's really hard for me to picture this site crowing a Wii game the best of the decade given our attitude toward the system.

Wii has been a total joke on this site for a while. Wii Sports has always been kind of a joke entry, not something that has any chance at being strong.

Gamecube never had the negative stigma that Wii has. Brawl would still do pretty well - that doesn't mean people are going to like the Wii. there is nothing that can be done to save that console's image for 'gamers'.

Part of it probably has to do with the fact that the GameCube was a commercial failure while the Wii is anything but, for reasons sickening to a hardcore gamer.

About this poll, I could imagine the Wii basically being a Brawl/Zelda machine for a Wii owner, which is rather saddening but what can you say? It perfectly explains why the Wii is not doing well in this poll, despite having two of this site's (apparent) favorite games (I could go on for hours about how my recent playthroughs revealed my order of 21st century Nintendo hits to be SMG2 >= SMG > MP > TP > SSBB, but...yeah).

Wii has been a total joke on this site for a while.

The Wii really started to spiral downwards during 2008 and that was well before the motion control fad came about with Sony announcing the PlayStation Move (and later, Microsoft with their Kinect). Though the motion control fad has probably increased the backlash towards the Wii. 2009 would be another year of downward spiraling for the Wii. When there is another System of the Year poll, Wii should probably be only slightly lower than the last System of the Year poll.

I think the biggest reason is that Wii is just so underpowered and different. It misses out on nearly all multiplats worth playing, and the ones it does get can be played on the other two systems in 1080p and with superior online. Even though GameCube was also not amazing with third party support, it was always seen as a contender. It was the best multiplayer console of the bunch (like anyone really cared about Xbox Live before Halo 2 hit) and a graphical powerhouse that gave gamers some beautiful looking games. The GameCube was never seen as "lacking." The Wii certainly is. Its games look much worse, its multiplayer - an area Nintendo dominated for at least two console generations - is archaic, and there's absolutely no sense of community among Wii owners. The 360 and PS3 offer gamertags, Achievements/Trophies, much easier voice chat and communication in general, and a vastly superior multiplayer gaming system.

With the GameCube and Prime, RE4, REMake, and Melee, I felt I was getting some of the best gaming experiences of the decade. With the Wii, unless there's a Galaxy in the console, it almost feels like I'm wasting my time. It's weird and almost sad.

I didn't vote on today's poll, but I know I certainly wouldn't vote for the Wii. I do play a lot on the console but actual Wii games not too often. It's only been Brawl, Twilight Princess, and both Galaxy games so far this year for completed playthroughs of actual Wii games (even then only the main quests in the Galaxy games and unlocking every character and stage in SSBB, and in Twilight Princess I skipped a lot of minigames. Other M will follow soon, and then I'm probably wrapping up the Wii for good this year, though I will probably have Resident Evil 4 in January).

Between the rest it was difficult. I don't feel like voting for a handheld, and the PC, PS3, and 360 share a lot of the same games. Hmmm...

-PC exclusives aside from World of Warcraft don't seem so killer app so far.
-I've heard that the PS3 versions of The Orange Box and Fallout 3 are worse than their counterparts on other systems.
-360 has very few exclusives...wait, perhaps Halo 3 and Mass Effect 2 are enough? Yep, guess who I'm voting for.

As for the decade contest I feel that Brawl and TP will be fine, the main thing is that the poll question wants us to take the console by average and it's quite likely that the favourite game probably isn't on the console that we voted for. Also the Wii hate was pretty large already by 2009 and it seems that only SMG has taken the major hit.


So does anyone think that MGS4 has a chance at taking this contest? While a lot of people think MGS4 will get weaker due to not being the only stand-out PS3 title anymore we could look at it as the PS3 gained popularity so thus MGS4 may have gain a slice popularity.

Pretty hilarious, but not really unexpected at this point. Voted DS personally, but happy 360 is doing well too.

Don't think this will hurt Brawl or TP any, though I'm with charmander in wondering how people can love the Gamecube and hate the Wii considering how similar their big games are. I guess "OMG MOTION CONTROLS 666" is enough to deter most GameFAQs users, and the Nintendo fanboys probably sided behind the DS anyway.

Now I wonder how many people on this site have TP for Gamecube or Wii.

If the Virtual Boy was on there, Wii should be able to beat that. I can also see handhelds like the Game Boy or Game Boy Color being SFFed or just genuinely weak enough to get their butts kicked. I could see Wii having a close match with GBA, actually.

I don't see Wii beating any of the actual consoles or even the DS.

The whole stigma around it. Gamecube was a legit console for us gamers, and it just fell short of the mark because of the PS2. Wii is not a console for us gamers, so the sales of it doesn't matter because gamers are still going to hate it.

I don't think Galaxy really dropped that much. A non SFF match between it and Modern Warfare would have been close in 2007, and it would be close now, just in the other direction. If anything, I would guess that Modern Warfare boosted a little due to people playing it more, while Galaxy fell off a little since it was no longer only 2 months old.

You're missing one huge factor, though: how they compare relative to their fellow consoles. GameCube compared just fine; it was on equal footing with the PS2 and Xbox. Wii is completely outclassed. It's just a lesser system.

I honestly like how Nintendo is simply trying not to compete in the traditional sense.

Also I personally like how the Wii doesn't push graphics technology too far, but that's probably The Lorax in me speaking. I will definetely admit that the Wii's library is lacking overall.

And now let's see what I can come up with for

Changes to Expect in 2010

* MGS4 to perform like a Favorite, as long as it can draw a favorable matchup (like Brawl)
* G/S/C to look like a Favorite no matter who it draws
* KH1 and 2 to slip back to Near-Elites
* TP probably acts more like a high Contender

* Oblivion, ToS, and God of War slide to High Mid (ugh, that whole 4pack was wacky)
* WoW anti-voted down to a Mid-Card

I expect Fallout 3 to look better than last contest as well. Don't forget if it starts in like mid october like we expect it probably will, that'll be right when New Vegas comes out and a lot of the site will be in a Fallout mood.

I wouldn't count SH2 out, it was stuck in a match with FFX and MGS2. It'll still be weak, but not as weak as the stats suggest.


I expect Fallout 3 to perform slightly better even if Fallout Las Vegas wasn't coming out. While it held it's own against MGS4 in the game of the year poll, something about Halo 3, Portal and Call of Duty 4 makes me feel that it was held back a bit.

Then again Las Vegas coming out is probably good for the game since Fallout 3 does feel like one of those games that people may not remember as time passes by.
