Snake isn't going to benefit THAT much from MGSV hype. At this point, it's pretty clear the character in the game isn't him. He might get a general MGS boost or something, but it won't be much.

Big Boss has a great shot against Luigi because Ness will probably be there holding him down a bit. Without Ness, who knows how that would go. I'm kinda disappointed by that setup, personally. I was looking forward to Big Boss/Luigi before the bracket revealed Ness was in that 3-pack with no one to really challenge him.

Also I realized that the first round match is Locke/Ness. I don't believe that was done intentionally, but it's just like, "Whoa."

CATS was the Loch Ness monster all along...!

As for MGS5 hype, I don't think it would be a big boost, but should somehow help Snake maintain his popularity.

It's already 2013, let's hope that the Link fanboys have reached maturity, is there a need to crown him as champion every contest. Had Snake dominated this much, i would anti-vote him too.

Uh... who's going to win in Zelda/Lightning/Charizard?

At first I picked Charizard because for some reason I remember him getting 60% on Kratos and 54% on Bowser. Turns out he got 54% on Kratos. >.< I am guessing the match against Kratos is a fairer indicator of strength, since Pokemon HG/SS was not released yet.

Okay, so Zelda's got this, right?

But then I checked Zelda's performance in that same contest. 60% on Jecht? Really? 36% on Samus? Was LoZ weaker that year? Nah, couldn't be. But then I checked Ganondorf's performance... weak. He fell short of 43% on Sonic while Kirby exceeded 45%. Looks like Zelda lost some strength, after all. That was THEN, of course... she could have easily recovered.

And.... whoever wins that, will Mega Man have a chance in MM/Zero/(Zelda or Charizard)? Initially I thought Zelda, but I checked back on a previous match....

Weighted Companion Cube, 35000 [23.88%]
Solid Snake, 55084 [37.59%]
Mega Man, 34762 [23.72%]
Zero, 21706 [14.81%]

Mega Man was a little more than 1.5'd by Snake in 4-way with Zero's presence, which roughly matches what Zelda could do, apparently. The new SSB factor could give Mega Man some hope, as well.

36% on Samus is expected, Vincent/Zelda proved she's not touching the square near-elites and I wouldn't expect Bowser/Luigi/Yoshi and friends to perform much better

Am I crazy for thinking that because Tingle is also an LoZ character, he'll serve as a lightning rod for the "anyone but Link" votes and will actually manage to get second place in that R1 match? He's definitely got the recognizability factor over Isaac.

The idea of Tingle actually not finishing last in a match greatly amuses me, even if he's still getting under 10% of the vote.

Now that the Expert Challenge rules are up

let's DISCUSS some matches that may be harder to guess 2nd place for

just going off Division 1, it's already hard to say who will win Tharja/Juilet/Tina, let alone 2nd. Same with Drave/Chie/Jak.

Hard to say who will be 2nd between Yuri Lowell and Face. Borderlands is obviously the more played but I dont really know much about Face's character. Vesperia and yuri seem to have enough fans imo to make it a close 2nd place but who knows.

Tingle didn't look completely horrible in 2006, albeit that was at the height of Zelda hype. He should be getting SFFd pretty hardcore though, almost as bad as 2007.

I'm in the same boat with that one. I've always wondered if he just got genre-SFF'd against Tifa and ended up looking worse than he should. (I know he's weak, but I'd like to think he's closer to Lloyd than Jade)

I was talking to three LoL players yesterday (ones that play on Twitch for money) and asked them if they thought Jak was more popular than Draven and they said "of course. I can't imagine someone voting Draven over Jak. He's cool I guess but Jak is an icon."

They probably have a different mindset than most GameFAQs users, especially with that "Jak is an icon" bit, but you take what you can get.

Also, I'd expect Tingle to get 2nd in that match, mostly because Isaac BOI is going to be just that weak, and I feel like there's going to be enough people who think voting for Tingle over Link is "funny" to get him 2nd.

I'm mostly going to go with stuff I feel at least somewhat confident in, even if it's just picking who finishes last. Stuff like Tharja/Juliet/Tina I'm not touching, at least not right now. Maybe later. I doubt I'll pick the entire match in that case because that's one of those situations where you could get all 3 wrong.

Isn't Face McShooty on the cover of Borderlands? I know a bunch of people have Vaas moving on since he's the cover boy of Far Cry 3, but I've never played Borderlands so I have no idea how big of a role Face plays compared to Vaas.

Face appears on the cover for both Borderlands games, so maybe he could benefit in that sense?

I do know that Vaas was heavily marketed: he also featured prominently in trailers for Far Cry 3. I don't see him losing to Laharl, at the very least, and that kills Neku's chances of winning.

Yeah that and Neku/Vaas/Catherine has the risk of giving you -6. If you want to win you essentially need to predict everything in rounds 3-5 and you'd probably can't skip too much in round 2 either.

I'll probably avoid matches that will give me negative points in the first round and go from there.

On a related note, I asked him if he plans to run a bonus 24-hour poll on September 14th during the one day break before the finals. We could very well have 2 bonus matches in the same contest if he plans on running a poll during the 12-hour break and 24-hour break.

If we do get a bonus 12-hour day match at the end of round 1, we could use it to set up a potential wire-to-wire match using a character who is good with the ASV and another character who is weak with the ASV. Any potential suggestions for a bonus 12-hour day match must have 3 characters in the match, to maintain the spirit of the contest.

For the bonus 24-hour match before the final match, we could have a match that involves the three second place finishers in their "Final Nine" matches. So if Sephiroth, Solid Snake, and Samus all finished in second place in their respective "Final Nine" matches, the bonus match would be Sephiroth/Snake/Samus. That would be a very intense match where the three characters could finish in any possible order. It would be the closest match to a 33.34/33.33/33.33 result.

For the bonus 12-hour day match, one of the characters should be Jecht since we were surprised that he didn't get into the 243 character contest after originally getting into the last Character Battle. Jecht is also a guy who would have a terrible ASV, being from Final Fantasy, so that means we need a character with a good ASV (who is slightly weaker than Jecht). For the third character, we should have someone who is slightly below the fodder line.

Huh, I never noticed the 12 hour gap after round 2. I resubmitted my feedback ticket to ask about a 12-hour poll at the end of round 2.

In that case, we could very well end up having 3 bonus matches in one contest. No previous contest has had more than one bonus match.
