You would think Sony Land would prop Persona up more than this

P4 really did pick up bad habits from those Rockstar games, puffing your chest and threatening to take the lead for like 12 hours without ever doing it. That's what happens when you let spunky teens hang out with jaded adults

It's closer at this point than RDR or GTAV were to taking the lead from it. I wouldn't completely rule out its chances here.
1) Europe as Sony Land has always been a mischaracterisation. Playstation does better than Xbox on most of the mainland and that's the extent of it, how it does relative to other systems varies a lot based on time and location.

2) Persona isn't THAT associated with Sony. Not in the same way as the biggest PS1 titles for instance.

3) It has done better in Europe against Xenoblade than any game Xenoblade has faced since polls began I think. It's just that Xenoblade is really strong in Europe.

It’s one of the best RPGs ever made.

Xenoblade Chronicles is exactly what I expected from a sequel to Final Fantasy 12. To me it's the real Final Fantasy 13. It shouldn't be downplayed for being a Nintendo exclusive it's really an all time great JRPG.
Nintendo Europe getting to do Xenoblade's dub gave the game away

But seriously I actually believe Persona's main games are even more exclusive to Sony than some of their big 'exclusives'. There's still no way to play any of them on anything but Playstation, even stuff like Horizon is coming to PC

But points taken

Interesting. I've been on the fence about buying the remaster. I played Chronicles 2 and felt that it was enjoyable but painfully cliched and horribly voice acted. How does the original compare to XC2?

I got Xenoblade when it was ported to WiiU and I did not get very far in it because there were too many sidequests and 90% of them were bad

"Just don't do all the sidequests", you might say. Well I've got problems and one of my problems is that I do sidequests obsessively, and Xenoblade is a very bad game for someone with that problem
Wait, I didn't think it was ever ported to the Wii U?

Xenoblade did come out on the Wii U Virtual Console though

nothing special just running the game in Wii mode
Yes it wasn't a port in the manner of the 3DS or Switch versions, it was just the Wii U emulating it effectively.

XC2's voice acting improves immensely after the early going (and the expansion is leagues better), but the first game has one of the best dubs for any JRPG. Regarding cliches they are much less obvious. 2 cranked up the anime tropes in its first half, and while 1 uses some it's much subtler. The game was deliberately going for a much more Western feel in presentation, story, and gameplay than most other JRPGs. 2 went much more anime and over the top, but then tones it down a lot as it goes on.

Great summary, thanks! It sounds like the issues I had with XC2 (which weren't major enough to prevent me from putting in a ton of hours) are less present in the first, which is good news. I think this has convinced me to buy it.

From noon on, Persona 4 Golden added 200 votes to its lead on RDR and 100 votes to its lead on GTAV. That would still cause it to come up a bit short here, but I'm still hoping it can make things interesting if nothing else.

Should it come down to rallies later, it feels harder for P4G to rally against Xenoblade than it was against two Rockstar games. Then again, P4G didn't need to rally AS much with a small lead as it does with a small deficit.

Nothing's guaranteed.

You can emulate all of them on PC, which a surprising number of people seem to do (the RPCS3 emulator's strong recent progress was probably partially due to people wanting to play P5 on PC somehow, as the game is fully playable there). I think the Persona games' natural design qualities appeal to non-PlayStation people a lot more than the average Sony exclusive, so people who really want to play them but aren't normally drawn to first-party Sony exclusives will find a way to access them, be it buying a cheap PS2/PSTV/PS3, borrowing a friend's console, watching a Let's Play, or emulating. Meanwhile the people who are normally super into Sony's PS3-and-later first-party output probably aren't going to be as drawn to Persona.

Most American dubs use standard NA English which people are used to due to years of American mass media. If an American dub of Xenoblade has everyone speaking with a deep south drawl, it'll probably be jarring for a lot of people too.

With British dub, you get all kinds of different accents people aren't familiar with including "the guy with the over the top cockney", the guys with the thick Scottish accent, etc. I personally don't mind that much as long as it's easy to understand what they are saying, but I can see why people might be turned off by it.

The original was full or error but had tons of character and was extremely enjoyable. I actually loved the story as a result.

WotL is dull, dry, uninteresting, and is enough to make me not even like the game anymore.

Is losing "Surrender now or die in obscurity! " worth fixing "Dycedarg's Elder Brother"? Absolutely f***ing not.

FFT's original script is more memorable partially because of the errors.

WotL's script is entirely unmemorable.

The nonsense Malak spouts at the end of Chapter 3 where he talks about the nature of the Lucavi and the Zodiac Stones.

"I guess it means whoever has the stones will have to deal with the problem" or however it went.

And yes, VII's localization was rough, but they were on a pretty big time crunch with that one.

I don't think a character using that word in 1997 is 'bad'. It was commonplace in media many, many years beyond that.

To me, a bad script is one that is hard to believe, hard to follow, doesn't have clear cause and effect, lacks characters and motivations, etc.; we can find it unsavory, but I don't know that this is a genuine critique of script quality (that said, if someone says they dislike the game because of the use of the word, I wouldn't say they are wrong to think that way)
