Maybe we could just petition Allen to put Sonic 3 and S&K against each other in the first round, and that's how we combine them somehow.

Dark Souls is absolutely doinking TLOU right now and making its side of the bracket look really bad, but how much do the leaks matter? 2%? 3%? 8%? Who knows.

Meanwhile I never thought Skyrim was dropping its Division, and I'm sure some ppl are gonna call this performance a 'comeback'. But I feel NieR was overrated from the word go and this could just be that side of the Division being exposed ala P4G vs XBC.

Death Stranding wasn't close it reviews. I don't know what you think was expected of UC4. It was meant to be the ending of the series, so no they didn't drastically improve everything in the way UC2 did, but it kept the quality, drew a load of new people in and people loved it.

Death Stranding was probably the first true "Oscar Bait" kind of game given all the hype surrounding it. TLoU was much less divisive than this despite having the same criticism thrown at it.
Death Stranding probably has a much better reception if Kojima had managed expectations of it better. You can't release an AAA game wildly different from every other AAA game out there without carefully and clearly explaining your vision behind the game, but the marketing/buildup for the game relied largely on obfuscating what exactly the game was.

Honestly, I applaud these attempts to broaden the appeal of gaming. This may sound crazy at first and may open up a pandora's box of discussion, but I don't think every video game needs to be "traditionally fun" so long as it is engaging. The developers who go down that route open themselves up to a lot of criticism though, as there is that segment of gaming fans who do believe that fun (and fluid, intuitive gameplay) is king.

This is also why Nintendo has never really faced this type of criticism - their games are the epitome of fun.

I disagree. The up-front sales would have been less but the long-term sales would have been better. Word of mouth to Death Standing has been vicious and I believe that a large part of it is because people simply aren't getting what they expected, with the biggest sticking point being the game's lack of combat. AAA games with a western art style are ALWAYS heavy on combat. It's expected.

They might be better relative to the early sales in this scenario but I doubt they're better than its actual sales.

The overall reception might have been better bc expectations were managed, but people just didn't want this style of game. Straight up. At least not the amount of people these AAA games usually appeal to.

And I LIKE the game, mind.

Dark Souls should win this whole contest. It's probably the only game that actually stands a chance given this place and its unhealthy obsession with Zelda
TeslaCoi1 5/7/2020 6:40:38 PM#89
Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Witcher 3, and God of War (the new one) are the ones I have been expecting to be the strongest contenders. Out of those, I haven't played Witcher 3 yet (really should get on that I guess...), as I never could get into the first two games.

Breath of the Wild, as much as I'm a massive Zelda fan, as much as I enjoyed it, and despite spending 100's of hours on it, and also taking into account the near perfect reviews it got all around, I can't bring myself to vote for it, because I didn't like the lack of good and varied dungeons, the story was weak, I hated the breakable weapons mechanic, and I really rather wish they hadn't brought RPG mechanics into the franchise. Not because I don't like RPG's, I love them, but there are already so many good RPG's around, that I wish series that traditionally have been action-adventure games with very little RPG mechanics, could stay that way, as I love those types of games as well, and like to switch between the two, but these days action-adventure games that aren't semi-RPG's have become rare, while in the past they weren't, and that makes me kind of sad. All in all, I still like Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess more than Breath of the Wild.

As for Xenoblade Chronicles, that's imo the best JRPG ever made, I loved it to bits, and thought it was darn near perfect (disliked X though...), but it already got to shine in the previous decade, and there's another game I personally enjoyed more, so...

Which brings me to my own personal pick, the new God of War. I enjoyed it like crazy (even though, yes, I know, it's another case of a traditionally action-adventure only franchise adopting some RPG mechanics). I've replayed it countless times now. I can't wait for the sequel. Which is funny in a way, because I think every single one of the older God of War games don't come anywhere close, and I've platinumed all of them. My vote would never go to any of those in the later parts of a competition like this. They really took things up several levels and revolutionized the franchise for the better with the new game imo. Of course I know not everyone agrees, which is fine. I think God of War might have gone further if it wasn't pitted against Witcher 3 so early. I never really expected it to actually win though, much as I'd like that, so it's fine.

Skyrim and Dark Souls are of course also very high tier games and I've always expected them to go far in the competition, but not quite as far as the other games I mentioned. But I might be wrong. For the record I haven't played any of the Dark Souls games yet, and Skyrim probably isn't my thing, as Elder Scrolls 4's gameplay bored me to death.

At this point I personally kind of expect The Witcher 3 to win. None of the games I've mentioned are games that would make me shake my head if they win the entire contest. I'm totally cool with that. Mario Kart games and Super Smash games though?... :-/ I mean, I've played the majority of all the games in both of those franchises, mostly with friends, and still do occasionally, and enjoy them quite a bit, Smash in particular, but I think such games are too simple for GOTD or even GOTY stuff.

nah i disagree. It was just a bad game with a good concept.

the story was completely awful with metaphors thrown in all over the place and forced serious themes that never really go anywhere outside of silly shock values. Most characters are poorly written outside of a couple and the ending is one of the worst and laziest ive seen. I spent a good 12 hours on DS before watching the rest of the story and youtube and i wish i could have my time back

its got nothing to do with combat. SOTC was also a gsme that invoked isolation and unique world presence but did so without all the utter tedium and bloated crap DS has

for all the good things DS does and it does a few things well the gsme was just built around Kojima circlejerk Bulls*** that it ends up being bad.

the best thing about DS is the meditative experience of just wandering around the world delivering packages and connecting with others through a unique tool that lets you help others. But everything around the game is filled wi ttu nonsensicap Bs that it overshadows and hinders the main experience.

ive heard the americans prefer shooters crap and its just an excuse by Kojima for a f***ing vanity project with lazy ass game design.

Thanks for your input. I also wasn't sure what to expect from the new GoW but was so pleasantly surprised with the experience. The world and characters are just meticulously crafted, as is the gameplay, which honestly works way better than a close-up third person melee action has any right working. It would be a worthy winner for me if not for spectacular games like BotW and Bloodborne cracking into my all-time rankings. It's certainly worthy of a seat at the table, in any case.

And as for the expected winner, any longtime contest follower in this community will tell you that it's Zelda. Witcher is the very distant #2, but it'll need a big rally to oust Zelda.
Sharinnegan 5/7/2020 6:49:57 PM#97
right now, if you dont believe TLoU's leaks affected it significantly inbetween rounds, Dark Souls's performance is putting it on par with 2015 Final Fantasy X, using Batman as the measuring stick.
If Skyrim keeps rising while the other match is static I'll feel pretty good about it getting to semis.

Which is good because I need it to be stronger than DkS and weaker than Witcher which is where it's lining up to be.

I know right? :-) I loved the story as well. I'm one of those rare, weird gamers who actually values the combination of story, world building, setting, and characters of a game more than I do the actual gameplay. I love the old Legacy of Kain games for example. The new God of War satisfies me in all those aspects AND gameplay, so I love it.
