wow..the results actually flipped. ok..Skyrim is definitely the favorite next round.

that said, it is weird that this makes Pokemon look equal to Mario Kart 8. i guess now both of these performances have a bit of a question mark in them (Souls might be overperforming from TLoU backlash, and Skyrim could be overperforming because Pokemon was just never very strong to begin with)

I don't know if Dark souls has enough WRPG credit (It has always seemed to have more of a JRPG audience but really is pretty broad), and if it does I don't know if it is above Skyrim, which is still a very high entry on that hierarchy.

SMG2 probably beats MK8 head to head, but I wouldn't guarantee it and indirectly I don't know that there's much difference. MK8's widely considered the best of the series, it's the only Mario Kart game to have two major releases, and Switch-games have mostly been on fire here (of which MK8 has been the best selling among them).

Now people adore SMG2 and it's got top-of-the-decade levels of reception so I don't want to downplay that. Mario Kart games are almost always top-sellers too so I don't want to overstate that. Still, I think that match is more complicated than it's been treated. For all of its accolades, SMG2 wasn't THAT big of a release for the Mario-series.

Now that we have 8 games left, what would people rank as the top 10 games in the contest? Think I'd go with something like:

1. Breath of the Wild
2. SSBU
3. Witcher 3
4. SMO
5. Skyrim
6. Dark Souls
7. Persona 5
8. Xenoblade
9. Mass Effect 2
10. God of War or P4G?

Not sure about 10th place. GoW looked so bad. Really not sure if it'd match up to P4G at this point. Also the order for a lot of these is debatable, of course.

It would be almost a "Cloud is still the second strongest character" feeling after everything it's been through.

The Galaxy games are overrated as f*** in these contests. For all the amount of praise they get they always perform like s***.

you can quibble on the order if you want, or add in Dark Souls if you really think it's all that.

the rest go something like:

Persona 5
Dark Souls
Mass Effect 2
Xenoblade
Persona 4

with Link Between Worlds as an honorable mention. I don't believe in God of War at all, really. it'll be hard to make direct comparisons with Witcher/Skyrim, Smash/Xenoblade and Zelda/Smash coming up. I wanted Persona 4 to win just to avoid Xenoblade getting potentially embarrassed.

edit: I just realized that we basically have 8 RPGs and 2 Nintendo games. yikes.

Smash/Odyssey
Skyrim/Dark Souls/Persona 5
Galaxy 2/God of War
Mass Effect 2

i'd sooner take Link Between Worlds over Persona 4, i don't have any faith in P4.
but i think the debate is largely in that last slot more than anything else.

Imo it's something like

BotW
Witcher/Smash
Odyssey/Skyrim/Dark Souls/Persona 5
Xenoblade/God of War/Persona 4/Mass Effect 2

Also GTA 5 and RDR kind of tied with P4 so maybe they should be there too. Or maybe it's Xenoblade we are overrating, because of the result on Three Houses.

If GTAV was on Switch it would have beaten Persona 4

The last bit for the top 10 is quite the cluster. Xenoblade/P4G/GTAV/RDR are all about equal with each other. RE2/Bloodborne aren't too far from ME2 to not at least be within the conversation.

Having God of War while making Witcher ~= SSBU means we need to entertain the idea of A Link Between Worlds and Spider-Man (even if you think GoW was SFF then ALBW also has that argument).

You could even make a case for Portal 2, TLOU, Pokemon HGSS and NieR depending on how close Persona 5/Dark Souls/Skyrim get to Witcher.

So much for Skyrim being a disappointment, though Game Freak being so bad and Sword/Shield being so underwhelming is probably hurting Heart Gold/Soul Silver a bit, similar to how Naughty Dog's actions and TLOU2 is hurting TLOU1.

Oddly enough, Andromeda didn't do anything to damage ME2, nor did Fallout 76 with Skyrim. Perhaps it's a recency issue that can cause anti-votes?

Weren't people talking a lot about Skyrim underperforming prior to today's match? Especially seeing how it's even gotten Nintendo representation in recent years (and the Switch port is really solid too), which you'd think would have strengthened it further. I definitely think Bethesda's fall from grace has hurt Skyrim somewhat, and should prove decisive if it goes up against TWitcher 3.

ME2 is a better example, I guess people are more sad about what BioWare has become than they are outright angry at the company, and EA probably gets a lot of the blame for that anyway. ME2 is probably seen as a blameless product of Good BioWare.

It wasn't just Fallout 76 turning people against Bethesda. I've seen more and more YouTube videos pop up expressing criticism of even the company's more highly-regarded games. Fallout 3 has basically become the Fallout series' equivalent of J. J. Abrams's Star Trek.

Which has absolutely been the case for over ten years for each, so I don't get the "basically become" wording.

I shouldn’t have gambled on Xenoblade beating Smash. It’s been surprising me this entire time though so I thought it might somehow pull off another win. If it does win I’ll make the second chance leaderboards lol
