I never played Breath of the Wild (I do own the game now, but I find it hard to commit to something so big and am kind of afraid I won't like it as much as my favorite Zeldas because I'm not usually into open-world type games like that), but Twilight Princess has such an unbelievably empty overworld even by Zelda standards. Also the point of Breath of the Wild was to serve as a shake-up to what many felt was a stale series. So the point was for it to not be like a typical Zelda game. That doesn't mean you have to like it, but still. Based on some of your other opinions, it sounds like you just don't like open world games. Can't fault you honestly. I'm not into them much either since I typically get overwhelmed by everything you can do and just check out quickly. I do kind of want to rectify that though. MetalmindStats posted... I know I'm late to the conversation of the top 10 games in this field, but it's an interesting enough topic that I wanted to give my two cents anyways. (Plus, it's not like there's anything compelling being discussed right now.) Portal 2’s good but it’s not that good, I would drop it and SMG2 (though I have a lot of time for the SMG games, if it makes it depends on how far above SSBU Witcher actually is). I would say:
3-5 are basically interchangeable, and I’d agree with the games competing for the last spot, perhaps minus P4G sans rallies. I just decided to change this sig. Blaaaaaaargh Advokaiser |

Portal 2’s good but it’s not that good, I would drop it and SMG2 (though I have a lot of time for the SMG games, if it makes it depends on how far above SSBU Witcher actually is).Yeah, I think I overrated Persona 5 a bit in retrospect, as a likely 56% unrallied on Portal 2 clearly doesn't measure up to nearly 60% on HGSS. On second thought, I'd swap Persona 5 with Skyrim and bump Portal 2 off the top 10 in favor of Xenoblade, though I still think there's razor-thin margins between places 9-13. As for Galaxy 2, in addition to my high Witcher 3 estimation, I think Nintendo's rising tide since 2015 has carried Galaxy 2's boat, as it were, with it. Plus, I don't think too much of this field's strength in general, as BotW and Witcher 3 are the only games I'd take to reach the divisional finals in an average 2015 division. I
think people are writing Persona 5 off too quickly, that game is the
only JRPG left and it has massive following. Lets also not forget the
many rallies Persona will get. If you post a rally in Witcher subreddit
nobody will even notice it due to the amount of cosplaying spam LOL. |
To
get a bit into why Xenoblade and P4G aren’t necessarily right next to
each other, we can look at the way P4G behaved in the last two hours.
Once the rally was pinned it shaved over 150 votes off in 75 minutes
after hours of relative static. If that pin had never happened, the
result would have been more like 50.5 than 50.2, which is a good 1% for
other games to slot in. And that isn’t even accounting for the prior
rallies, just the last push. I just decided to change this sig. Blaaaaaaargh Advokaiser |

Nor do I even have much of an idea what it is. Maybe next time a games contest rolls around? I've never usually been this good at predicting stuff, though I do feel like I put more thought into this bracket than I did for any previous contest. I think most of the reason my score is so good is because I got Division 2 perfect. Picking Xenoblade to correctly win Division 4 probably didn't hurt. I first got on the leaderboard after Division 2 Round 2, but I quickly fell off after getting P4 > RDR wrong. Then I got back on after Division 2 Round 3, climbed up due to picking Xenoblade correctly, fell down but not completely off due to picking Nier > Pokémon, then getting all the division winners right helped tons. What were my division winners in GOTD 1? I think Fallout 3, Half-Life 2, Brawl, Twilight Princess, Final Fantasy X, Resident Evil 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Pokémon Gold/Silver. I was kind of banking on 2009 x-stats holding more water than they actually did. "Nothing I could do!" -Darksydephil (edited 5/9/2020 4:26:01 AM)report |

The guru contest is basically a micro version of the normal contest. You submit the same bracket and compete with the rest of the board. It's easier to win and has different prizes, too (you get to nominate a character next contest)! Also it lets you see your opponents on a ranking and compare their brackets so it makes the contest pretty dynamic. |

Compare this to closed-worlds, like Twilight Princess's Hyrule, Majora's Mask's Termina, Bravely Default's Luxendarc, Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Titans, and Pokemon's countless routes - which are all so memorable and cozy. Sure, it's almost impossible to get lost in these, due to how linear they mostly are, but is that really such an awful thing? Even without minimaps, I'd know essentially where I was at a glance, where I am in relation to nearby towns or landmarks, and how to get to somewhere else. This cannot be easily done with open-worlds, due to their spaciousness inevitably making certain elements quite repetitive (I'm amongst a bunch of mountains; there's mountains all over the place), or open plains just being bland and forgettable. As for what Breath of the Wild was trying to achieve, I was one of the "fans" who did not feel like the series was getting "bland" or "stale" - in fact, I wanted another fantastic traditional game; the last brand-new one was 2013's A Link Between Worlds, and even that's heavily based on A Link to the Past (which I've never found enjoyable, personally, due to just how aged its controls and art style are, and how much damage enemies can deal in the Dark World) instead of being completely "new". After A Link Between Worlds, all we got were The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, which were remasters of two fantastic games, then this abomination of a game. Ugh, such an utter letdown. There's a reason why the "classics" like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Link's Awakening (which also recently got a remake; wonderful, but still not the brand-new experience I was hoping for), and for most A Link to the Past, are still beloved - it's because the traditional formula is still top-notch and eminently still very functional. Breath of the Wild might have been an experiment and an attempt to subvert the series' norms, but that doesn't automatically mean it's amazing or worth experimenting/attempting. I'm quite annoyed its undeserved success means a sequel's being worked on, instead of returning to what the series is actually good at - yet more years with nothing to look forward to except perhaps more remakes/remasters. Sigh... If Breath of the Wild, and its undeserved and unwanted sequel, were just side-projects while a true-to-form "Legend of Zelda" game was being worked on, I wouldn't despise BotW as deeply as I do. ...And, sure, Twilight Princess's Hyrule Field is rather empty compared to The Wind Waker's Great Sea, but that doesn't mean it's awful. The visuals, the music, and the speed of traversal via Epona still make it one of the best Hyrules I've gone through. Heck, I sometimes don't even warp to places and instead get there by horseback just to enjoy the audio and visual pleasure, whilst still knowing exactly how to get to my location. It's certainly leagues ahead of Ocarina of Time's Hyrule Field - now that's the "empty" and "overly large" one - or Breath of the Wild's, which is incredibly hilly in some areas (mandating slow, stamina-draining climbing) and incredibly flat in others, while also not having the same audiovisual charm. Then there's just how quick and painless random encounters with Bulblins are in Twilight Princess; just a couple quick sword slashes, and they're done, costing nothing but a few seconds. In Breath of the Wild, encounters with Bokoblins are slower and much more of a resource drain, due to the addition of weapon and shield fragility. There's just no comparison in my experience; Twilight Princess is just simply a much better game, and a much better "Legend of Zelda", than Breath of the Wild could ever hope to be. |
Stooge1969 posted... has any game ever scored over 70% in a quarterfinal? No. Highest % in a 1v1 games contest QF (so 2004, 2010 or 2015) before today was OoT's 59.9% v LTTP in 2015 (OoT then went to 67.38% v SMRPG in the SFs). The 2009 4-way contest had 4 polls in the QFs and SFs where OoT and FFVII managed to break 40% against 3 opponents. The highest of these was FFVII's SF where it got 44.77% v LTTP, SMB3 and SMW. In none of these would extrapolating the winner against the 2nd place finisher indicate a direct score of over 70% (none were even doublings). I'm so glad he's no longer a director for the series. It's like Aonuma failed to understand what made OoT so good while making TP.The Hidden Skills make combat much more interesting and deep than in any other Legend of Zelda game. The dungeons are spectacular in both visual design and puzzle design; they're all fun to go through. The Wolf is a fun secondary form, quicker and more agile than Ordonian Link with the ability to smell invisible enemies. Collecting the Tears allows the player to explore the new segment of Hyrule as they wish, with no real rush. Seeing Link and Midna bond throughout the game is great; easily the best character growth Legend of Zelda's ever seen. The soundtrack is stellar; easily one of the best Koji Kondo's ever done. ...Then they had to go and follow this masterpiece with the utter abomination known as Skyward Sword, which introduced "proper" motion support (didn't work, at all), removed most of the Hidden Skills, made Tear-collecting a timed test through terrain the player's already gone through - and added a reset condition on top of that, added resource collecting, made its "hub" area (in this case, the Sky, as opposed to Hyrule Field) extremely barren and slow to traverse, forced the player to go through its three land areas multiple times, introduced the worst boss the series has ever seen (the Imprisoned) and forced the player to fight him three times with each one being more annoying than the last, gave Link a set of Pouches and moved stuff from the Gear Screen (shields and ammo bags) and the Heart Gauge into it while limiting it to eight slots maximum, added shield fragility and limited stamina for the first time in the series, brought in some of the worst and most annoying NPCs I've ever seen, introduced a character far more interrupting and rage-inducing than Navi... Basically, Skyward Sword s*** on everything Twilight Princess did so well. Then Breath of the Wild used Skyward Sword as a reference. |
The wolf was great but it badly needed a mid-game damage boost to keep up with the Master Sword. |
Today's
Zelda Performance has to be the strongest by any game in this
competition so far. This is honestly pretty embarrassing for ME2, I was

BotW held up way better than I initially thought, even through the

There is nothing deep about TP's combat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INF6mRdPXZ0 (click to expand) Were we even playing the same game? (edited 5/9/2020 6:21:48 AM)report |
To be fair Zelda games have never been about deep 1v1 combat. The ones who excel most at action are some of the 2D Zeldas that just put a lot of enemies in the same screen with hard to dodge long range attacks (i. e. Wizzrobes) and force the player to strategize with the map. The thing that makes TP fun is just messing around with the different options for sword attacks and other items to groups of enemies, or those Dark Nuts. (edited 5/9/2020 6:47:03 AM)report |
I
feel like ME2 2015=2020 might be the best base you'll find based on the
limited information this contest provides. if that's the case, BOTW
looks to be just a little bit below LTTP. xyzzy |
For real though, League being DQ'd because the alpha came out in 2009 is some real assf***ery. The game launched 2010. |
It would have lost in Round 1 though. So why we exist? What happens when we stop existing? Nice job Hylian Knight 3, you were better than me in the Guru Contest! |
The
hidden skills don't do anything for the game's combat. You run into
Darknuts which seem pre-built just for hidden skills, and they block all
of them, even if Link is directly behind them when landing an attack.
It's infinitely easier to fight them with regular 4 hit sword combos.
Walk up barely in their range > backflip when they go to slam the
ground > stab combo. You will never take damage or take longer than a
couple minutes per Darknut vs you will always get smacked across the
room multiple times and take forever with hidden skills that have been
described by the game as perfect for enemies like Darknuts ("Use this
against heavily armored foes!" *does it* *darknut blocks it and smacks
you for it*). The shield bash and mortal draw are probably the only hidden skills that actually have use, and they make the game's combat shallower rather than deeper. Mortal draw deletes 90% of the game's enemies and makes it possible to kill some bosses in a single stun phase (In my most recent TPHD run, Stallord's second phase ended in one knockdown from this move). Shield bash lets you hit Dinalfos and... that's the one use I can find for it since all enemies that fire projectiles get killed in 1 hit from arrows so it's easier to just block projectiles or fire arrows from outside an enemies attack range. Oh, hey, and that boss fight at the end where you get to play tennis again? Don't use shield bash there, actually. You'll take knock the projectile off into the distance. Why would you think the move built around reflecting projectiles would actually reflect it toward the enemy instead of the distant wall? All the others are merely for flare (Ending Blow, back slice, helm splitter, Great Spin) or functionally useless/obsolete (Jump Strike [this is for multiple enemies! Please ignore the spin attack's/great spin's existence...]). They were cool but useless... like most things in Twilight Princess, unfortunately. You felt your sins weighing on your neck. |
LinkMarioSamus posted... Zelda > Mass Effect This is interesting Because while Souls has the lowest chance of making the final out of Souls/Witcher/Skyrim, it's certainly not impossible, so I think we're now in this situation: Souls wins: LMS wins Skyrim wins: Lasa wins Witcher wins: azuarc wins Quite the finale! Not to be confused with XIII_Stones. |
I’m
really torn about Dark Souls vs Skyrim tomorrow. Really want Dark Souls
to win since it is my favorite game of this decade (Persona 4 Golden
does not count) but Skyrim winning could potentially put me in Top 10 on
the leaderboard. That hasn’t happened for me since Character Battle IX
and it would be great. In the long run though it won’t matter since I
picked Skyrim over Witcher 3 and that is not looking good right now. I consider Skyrim the probably heavy favorite tomorrow but I will be ok if my game of the decade is the one that ends my bracket for not having faith in it. Also I hate myself for being disappointed seeing Xenoblade chipping away the percentages on Smash Ultimate just because I picked Smash to 61-49 it. I absolutely love the game and always wanted the best for it. The kicker in all this is that my bracket is just a fun entry and I don’t know why I’m taking this so seriously. What the f*** is happening to me? |

I
can't countenance a simple fighter game like Smash being on the way to
beat Xenoblade, a massive and complex RPG...I like Smash, but for me the

So
what kind of numbers do we expect between Persona 5 and Persona 4
Golden before SFF? This possibly puts Persona 5 within striking distance
(>45%) of Witcher 3. That or Witcher 3 is the clear second strongest game of the bracket. Game of the Decade 2 - Current Score: 212/256 Today's Picks: BotW and SSBU |
I'm
really expecting Persona to give Witcher a respectable fight. I'd be
surprised if it didn't crack 45%, actually. Witcher's only "normal"
outing was against its only Japanese opponent, so there's a case to be
made that its path has concealed its mortality against Nintendo/Japan. Now, it shouldn't really matter as long as Witcher gets the job done, since its path to the finals should be somewhat paved at that point... but there's still that chance that Persona actually has the mettle to contest tonight. Yoblazer https://imgur.com/gByqgPg |
I
expect P5 to be the only game to really put hands on Witcher until
finals, and god will that early vote SUCK for Gerry, but ehh. P5's
percent on Portal 2 is certainly good, but honestly it would have had to
exceed Witcher's % on GoW just for me to entertain the upset; I think
GoW > Portal 2 should be a relatively uncontroversial statement. Even if I have to pretend that 'Western SFF' is some monster thing that added 5 or 6 whole percent to Witcher's total, it would still beat Persona pretty comfortably. If

It looked great. Portal 2 looked great as well, but in their R3 matches God of War looked better to me, but I do think RDR2 might be reasonably (not hugely) weaker than the first, though saying that opens a whole new can of worms. If
