Persona 5 fanbase seems to have conceded, original 2 rallies are dead, most hentai ones deleted, newest rally is just posts from people happy it got this far

I don't know that if at this point, people were hoping Witcher was gonna bust P5's balls and put some ridiculous number up on it, but I think this is actually a very good performance, and one that makes it a pretty definitive #2 in the bracket, above Smash and Mario.

Thankfully both Persona games went up against an RDR game (at least by proxy). P4 barely scrapes by; P5 beats Portal 2 with more than 7%. If P4 and RDR1 mostly equal XBC, which puts up 41% on Smash despite potential SFF, then it's reasonable to expect that Persona 5 might actually be VERY close to Smash (and if there WAS SFF in that match, which we all expected, then P5 probably beats Smash outright).

Point being, P5 didn't get to look good until Division finals because it's half of the division was a massive joke. Its Portal match showed that in relation to everything but Zelda, it's actually VERY strong, and Witcher is casually breaking 55% on it.

I wouldn’t say P4G is naturally that close to Xenoblade. Without the pinned rally, but with all the other rallies, Xenoblade would have been closer to 51%. P4G cut an extra 100 votes compared to its previous matches against slightly weaker games. Without any rallies? Who knows, we’ll never actually know P4G’s true strength because there were loads of rallies firing all day. But that pinned rally alone unquestionably bigged it up.

The surprise there is that Xenoblade probably beats P4G with anonymous users.

Also can we talk about how good this top 8 is:

Breath of the Wild
Mass Effect 2
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Xenoblade Chronicles
The Witcher 3
Persona 5
Dark Souls
Skyrim

Those are all titans of the medium.

honestly if you swap out Xenoblade for GTAV our top 8 would probably be the top 8 on more mainstream websites

maybe some would have a call of duty in there

Also swap Ultimate or maybe Persona 5 out with Odyssey then it looks like a top 8 anywhere.

Last of Us was like Top 5 in nearly all of the game of the Decade lists I saw end of last year. That game is really loved outside of Gamefaqs.

That's because the P4G rallying either had a high backfire rate against a fellow JRPG or people significantly underestimated the Xenoblade counterrallies. I'm not convinced P4G/Xenoblade would have been more than a 50.5-49.5 with 0 rallying.

Feel like people are overestimating Xenoblade because of that Smash match (and people are overestimating Smash as well). I'd take Galaxy 2 and maybe Portal 2 and God of War over it.

EDIT: Oh nvm I misread.

Oh yeah, that probably replaces the other one of Persona and Ultimate.

Agreed Zen, though Xenoblade does curry huge respect of course even if it’s not as mainstream.

However, I don’t think any of this decade’s CoD games would be in consideration. Black Ops is the only one people near-unanimously like. And that’s the only one that made it!

If I were to say something instead of GTA it would be Minecraft as that has both the huge popularity and the critical respect that say Fortnite lacks.

It’s also all over the place on best RPG ever snd of the decade lists, it’s absolutely one of the top JRPGs ever in terms of acclaim.

Xenoblade is certainly critically acclaimed but I agree that it's the clear outlier in our top 8. It's really not brushing shoulders with stuff like Dark Souls and Skyrim as a 'titan' of gaming.

It's the most GameFAQs-y entry and that's not a bad thing.

GTA 5 and Persona 4 are much bigger than Xenoblade

Portal 2. It might not be incredibly strong or anything, but it's the only top 10 contender in this field that's truly outside of GameFAQs' wheelhouse.

Xenoblade was at least accomplished for humbling Nintendo and forcing them to release a game they were sure would fail. It's actually kind of remarkable how much of a success it has become.

Gamers love it because it's the anti-Wii Fit.

However if I can make the case for Xenoblade a bit here, it is easily seen as one of the best games of that generation and an all-time classic for the genre, the issue is one of mainstream knowledge. There Xenoblade has two advantages. The first is that it spearheaded a massive movement to get it released in the states (easily one of the biggest ever). The second is that that franchise saw exponential growth the second it got a proper release on a platform people were still playing. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was a legit mainstream success. The truth is Nintendo (especially NoA) didn’t realise what they had with Xenoblade, now they are actually giving it a chance it’s fast becoming a major franchise. It only took them most of a decade!

So it doesn’t make top 8 elsewhere but it may be closer than you think. It also benefitted from generous bracket placement here too. If it was just the 8 strongest games SMO would be there for sure.

Tales of Symphonia is probably the most "GameFAQs"-y I can think of, since it has so much strength on this site, but I almost never see it discussed or put on top 10 lists anywhere else. Neither the Nintendo communities nor the JRPG communities seem to hold it in that high regard.

I swear I hear people talk about Tales of Symphonia a decent bit even outside this site. Might just be NintendoCapriSun mentioning it from time to time though, since I watch a ton of TRG.

Breath of the Wild has very similar results from both registered and anonymous users. One of the few times Breath of the Wild doesn't have a huge advantage with registered users.

Tales of Berseria, the most acclaimed Tales game since Vesperia, looked like absolute turbofodder this contest, which shows how little GameFAQs cares about this series.

Japanese videogames are very overrepresented compared to their actual space in the market. It's just that the audience of these games is very vocal on videogames forum websites.

Yeah, Symphonia is definitely a top ten GameCube game, but that speaks to the paucity of the system's library more than anything else.

Then if my theory is right, Portal 1/2 have a decent chance at escaping Witcher SFF.

This actually got me thinking about which Nintendo console other than the SNES has the strongest top ten. It would have to be the Switch right? Especially if we’re factoring in ports because then it gets Witcher 3, Skyrim, and Dark Souls among others.

It makes me wonder if the Switch could one day pass the SNES even on here. Incredible system.

Well, I think we should only factor in games that originally released on the Switch rather than being ported over later because that makes things unfair for anything pre-Wii.

I would extend that to assigning games to the first Nintendo system they came out for. So Witcher 3 should count for Switch even as a late multiplatform port. I guess there can also be some leeway so Twilight Princess counts as both Gamecube and Wii.

That’s fair, though I guess there is the question of where the line should be drawn. Like if it’s a short delay that’s a Switch game (I was going to say MK11 but it turns out that was Europe only). But then there is something like Doom which is more ambiguous as it’s s year and a half - much shorter than the likes of Witcher or Skyrim but still large.

I think Double Dash fans are a loud minority that you'll often see repping the game on forums, but the game itself will probably flop in most high-vote contests.

I mean, Mario Sunshine has the same kind of support, and we saw how strong that game proved to be in the first GotD contest.

I wouldn't take Double Dash to do much, and I agree that its fans are a vocal minority.

Do you not realize Persona 5 just isn't anywhere near BotW? It was around a doubling in their GotY poll.

P5 would be lucky to stay at 30% on BotW most likely
