Agreed on the Pokémon front.

But if there's one, just one more Fire Emblem character added to Smash, it could objectively become a potentially dangerous situation for the franchise.

Pokemon has the benefit of being one of the largest series so everyone kind of expects them to have more representatives. It also helps that the Pokemon have been more unique than the Fire Emblem characters

if you know our movie ratings basically Mature is like R and Adults Only is like NC-17 or rated X.

M is mostly violent stuff like CoD or GTA and AO is pretty much just porn games. Major stores won’t sell AO games at all and I can’t think of one that has even been released from a major publisher. If a game somehow got an AO at first pass they’re definitely going to tone stuff down so they can get the M instead.

the console companies won’t even allow AO games to be released on their platform. They only come out on PC.

Adults only are games which features nudity. There's probably other things, like gambling with real money I imagine would be rated AO.

I don’t think anything that has gambling with real money would even go through the ESRB. That sort of thing would be regulated by someone else.

As far as I can tell Pokerstars has no ESRB rating.

the list is all porn games and like special “director’s cut” versions of M rated games where the difference between versions seems to be sexual in nature.

Thrill Kill got an AO purely for violence back in ‘98 but I think it would be close to impossible to get it just for violence today.

With the amount of violence, gratuitous or otherwise, in today's games, the fact that AO is essentially exclusively for sex/nudity is ridiculous to me.

The American rating system is a bit weird. What's the point in having a 17+ and then an 18+ that can't be sold anywhere.

I think the idea is you have 17+ so theoretically kids can only get those games if a parent allows them to and then you have the 18+ that is just for porn because you can’t let minors have porn obviously.

I generally agree with the ESRB, and I'm glad it exists as a guideline and warning at a personal level.

But M-ratings nowadays are just not enough, imho, especially with games getting more and more realistic while simultaneously going further over the top, with some M-rated games being way worse than others.

Movies suffer from the same kind of issue (compare an R-rated The Matrix to an R-rated, I don't know... Kill Bill), although that media has had that from decades now, while games have been having that tendency over the last 15 years.

there are like 3 games, ever - Thrill Kill, Manhunt 2, and Hatred - that ever got the AO rating primarily or only because of violence. So although it's not impossible, you generally have to go much farther than a M-rated game is willing to go. Which just doesn't happen really.

As mentioned AO games are in 90% of cases porn pretty much.

Yeah, stuff like Mortal Kombat and TLoU2 deserve the AO rating more than most games with sex scenes.

Graphic depictions of sexual acts is definitely a matter that should be taken with extreme caution with kids, but I'd say graphic violence should be taken equally seriously or even more so, since the former is a natural process that should be covered and explained since childhood, while the latter isn't necessary at all.

Both matters cause damage if exposed prematurely or without consideration, but for very different reasons.

It’s not just about having a sex scene. TLoU2 actually has a sex scene and obviously didn’t get an AO. The AO stuff is actual porn games.

Yeah you can get away with nudity in games without an AO rating too.

Most recently being Life is Strange 2 I think. I started a chapter and then all of a sudden boobs.

looking at the list of AO stuff I’m pretty sure the only game that isn’t intentionally just porn that got an AO based on sexual content is the Indigo Prophecy director’s cut.

If USA was a conservative country(like most Middle East Countries for example)I would understand it. But we are talking about a country that produces the most porn on the world and there are so many groups fighting to have people beeing naked on their home and stuff like that.

I don’t remember which country you’re from, but is it not illegal to sell porn to minors there? For AO we’re almost exclusively talking about games literally designed to be masturbated to, not normal games that happen to contain nudity.

Yeah I'm always amazed by the American media's puritanical attitude towards sex. Though I had a discussion with my dad the one time and he looks down on how promiscuous American women tend to be compared to in other countries so there.

Oddly enough, in a country as large and diverse as the US attitudes towards everything, including sex, are not monolithic. They vary widely. Popular media tends to take the “safe” i.e. conservative-leaning approach to subjects that are sensitive and divisive.
