Seeing MGS3 getting doubled by Last of Us in the first round hurts so much

To be fair, TLOU will probably be one of the strongest games in the bracket.
Congratulations to azuarc for winning the guru challenge

He must have made it in by virtue of the size, but he could probably get into a 128 bracket now.

Well when you say FF 7 you mean both games now so if you like RPG's you have played at least one of them.
So why we exist? What happens when we stop existing?

Nah, TLOU is the PS3's crown jewel, and it has one of the best stories in gaming (not to mention one of the best endings in any medium).

I'd rank it 5th in its division behind MGS3, SM64, SMW, and SSBU.

That said, it has no business thumping MGS3. None at all.

No, and no. The fact that it's treated as a seminal example of storytelling is bothersome to me because I don't think it's anything close to that.

Here's a list of characters I think have good chances to get in due to recent game releases since the last character battle. Feel free to rank them in order of presumed contest strength:

Jin Sakai (Ghost of Tsushima)
Ichiban Kasuga (Yakuza: Like a Dragon)
Zagreus (Hades)
Ryunosuke Naruhodo (The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles)
Omori (Omori)
Steve (Minecraft)
Pyra (Xenoblade Chronicles 2)
Juro Kurabe (13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim)
Doomslayer (Doom)
Sekiro (Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice)
Stella (Spiritfarer)
Jesse Faden (Control)
Yuito Sumeragi (Scarlet Nexus)

Some due to a popular game, some due to the game being popular on Board 8, and some due to Smash Bros.

EDIT: K. Rool has been removed because I forgot he got in the last contest.

Pretty surprised nobody mentioned Lady Dimitrescu.

He definitely would not be eligible because he's still based on a non-video game character despite the spoonerism. I don't think this is a Dracula situation because he literally is the character from the stories in GAA.

Honestly, I bet Allen would actually allow Herlock Sholmes into the contest, given that that name is an extra degree of separation that other borderline cases don't have (even though the name already existed for a similar parody that just became public domain). Whether or not Sholmes sees a memetic benefit as a result, or loses any benefit as a result of not actually being Sherlock Holmes is another story, but I wouldn't bet on him getting out of Round 1 either way.

I'd actually be curious to see how Edgeworth would do now after the newfound success of the Ace Attorney Trilogy. He'd still be weak, but he might be higher end fodder now.

How many Ace Attorney characters have gotten in before?

I'd root for Gumshoe so hard. He's awesomely funny (at least in all the classic YTPs I've seen him in).

Maya would probably be fodder (if she hasn't been in already), but seeing Von Karma with her whip and all would be awesome as well.

I did warn the anti-rally crowd this would happen, but they ignored the law of unintended consequences.

Check out the vote totals over on IGN, btw. If you allow rallies instead of telling people they're not welcome, you get 10 million votes in round one. Imagine that.

IGN matches on their site have about as many votes as GameFAQs does (before the vote doubling).

The lesson isn't that anti-rallying measures kill contests, it's that a site using social media is a good way to engage people instead of continuing to live in 2000.

People magically care enough to invade these contests in the first place. There is a sort of legacy to Gamefaqs contests, even if it's not IGN.
LeonhartFour 9/15/2021 7:09:38 PM#188
I mean, you can get them to care once. None of those rallies ever repeated itself. That's the problem. They invade, and then they leave. It doesn't result in any lasting traffic, and Allen has realized that.
(edited 9/15/2021 7:10:07 PM)report
pjbasis 9/15/2021 7:13:49 PM#189
I was just thinking you can get them to vote in all/more matches at least.
LeonhartFour 9/15/2021 7:14:47 PM#190
By, what, having 32 matches at once the way IGN is doing it? That's the only way it would happen, and a 5-day long match period would lose momentum really quickly.
pjbasis 9/15/2021 7:21:16 PM#191
Nah I think I didn't say that right. I think votals would increase from the various sources, which would limit the power of rallies the way they used to. The demographics would obviously shift substantially though, which could be fun if it's at least a new consistent.
LeonhartFour 9/15/2021 7:24:58 PM#192
I suppose. I think spreading the contest out onto Instagram and stuff would lessen some of the fun of contests for me because a large part of the fun is the individual statistics, and we would completely lose that unless Allen posts the combined results since IG doesn't let you see vote totals.

But regardless, I'm for bringing more voters in as long as they're consistent. I don't necessarily care what the site as a whole votes for. I just don't like it when it's completely skewed by one massive rally that's here one day and gone the next.
Sunroof 9/15/2021 8:49:44 PM#193
Allowing mainstream apps (YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) would totally ruin these contests. Gamefaqs is in its own little corner where no one else shares our love for old school games and whatnot. These contests would turn into the joke IGN contests. We just have to accept that we will never get more than 50k votes again and that rallies have about a 60% chance of happening each contest.
squexa 9/15/2021 9:12:19 PM#194
IGN has 8.2 million followers on twitter. GameFAQs has 6.5k. The "IGN-style" contest isn't even an option for GameFAQs.
congrats to azuarc, our GotD2 guru!
I mean, part of that is because IGN has evolved over the times. Those 8 million extra followers are partially the result of a long-term investment in staying relatively up to date and engage with the internet, while GameFAQs has tweeted 5 times in the last half decade.

IGN's a gaming news and review site, so naturally it makes sense to have a twitter for gamers that want to stay up to date. What can GameFAQs even tweet about? Nobody would care to get daily tweets like "we got 5 new FAQs uploaded today! come check them out now!" and expanding into news/reviews/memes/whatever doesn't make sense since that's GameSpot's job.
congrats to azuarc, our GotD2 guru!
