I wouldn't really say Skyrim had a good contest. Although, that could be due to Witcher 3 overshadowing it.

What was the consensus on Witcher 3 vs SSBU and SMO last contest?

I think the average person would take SSBU > Witcher 3 > SMO

I would take Witcher 3 over SSBU easy. Do people even think SSBU is stronger than SMO indirectly? By enough to stick a game in between at that. SMO looked better until it all came crashing down in the direct match.

Honestly, I definitely think so

People love to compare MK11 and Tekken 7 but the latter is definitely the more beloved game. And it’s not like doing 64-36 on both a Zelda game and Spider-Man is a bad feat, think it’s more impressive than 72-28 on DMC5 and Shovel Knight

I think the hype for all the DLC characters gives Ultimate a longer tail than Odyssey.

12.70% - Horizon Forbidden West
11.61% - Kirby and the Forgotten Land
12.13% - Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Pokemon ends up coming out on top over Kirby, though falling a little bit short of Horizon.

Peak Witcher 3 absolutely beats Smash. Not sure about now though.

I can't see any world where the current Smash game loses to the second worst 3D Mario, especially now that both games are likely a lot weaker than most people think they will be

Think SMO looked better in early matches particularly because of the GotD title. Smash isn't that original or revolutionary new game, but rather a celebration of gaming and optimization of a well established formula.

I don't mean head to head. SSBU won last time and would win in a rematch. But, it wouldn't surprise me if SMO did better against Witcher 3.

I don't think it would. Plus it was more about Smash Ultimate's wins looking less crushing than we would have thought vs. Odyssey's looking more so. It's very much more probable that Spider-Man and Link Between Worlds are really that strong while Shovel Knight and DMC5 are really that bad.

Heck, remember what a great contest DMC3 had in GOTD1?

Strong disagree, it held up and looked great. People here just underestimated The Witcher 3, as they continue to!

Also Elden Ring is definitely the strongest game since Breath of the Wild even though I agree that Horizon 1>Horizon 2. The real shocker is Kirby though, that could be one to watch.

It's too bad we don't have console GotY poll anymore. Feel like Kirby could win that one if its biggest competition is Xenoblade 3 and two Pokemon games.

Haven't seen general sales yet, but in Japan and the UK at least Forgotten Land is selling way better than any previous Kirby game.

To be fair Kirby, was literally released a week ago so there is some recency bias. We'll see how well it holds up in a few months.

We’ll definitely get a better sense later but if anything I’d expect a shift in Kirby’s favour - less than a week is not a lot of time for people to get hands on with it!

Elden Ring is strong but this web site is still stuck in 1999. Breath if the Wild is probably the only game from the last contest with a prayer of holding up against the 90s.

Notably, the former tend to have much bigger gaps between the haves and have-nots. Perhaps, but Pokémon games tend to age a bit differently, at least I don't think they should be that frontloaded. Horizon's release was basically overshadowed by Elden Ring, which had the been everywhere for the past month. I think Horizon has a chance of being better in a while when more people have played it.

Haha, I don't actually think ER could beat BotW, I just brought that up for fun. It's kinda interesting how close they are in those two polls though? Looks good for ER to be a real powerhouse.

If a contest were held now maybe Kirby could have a Zelda like run.

I wonder if Elden Ring would have beaten BotW2 in GotY if the latter wasn't delayed. It probably isn't beating BotW1, but the sequel...

Depends on how well received the sequel is or how soon it releases before Switch 2 comes out. Galaxy 2 was about as well received as the original but it came out after people had already bailed on the Wii, unfortunately.

(I would never bet against a well received Zelda vs. A western game, for the record)

Why'd you bring up western games?

Sorry still had Witcher 3 on the brain there (although the same applies for Smash Ultimate)

For whatever reason I keep mistaking Dark Souls and Elden Ring as being Western games when they aren't. I have to catch myself in my head rather than just knowing it intuitively.

Souls is made by Japanese developers obviously but it's also inspired by western games. The fantasy elements, the storytelling and the aesthetics are very much western style

I mean, BotW was heavily inspired by Skyrim but that doesn't make it Western

Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are based on Wizardry and Ultima

Sorry guys Elden Ring is Western which means Breath of the Wild is Western which means Cloud has fallen so far that he needed two shots and Smash to stay above 40 on a WRPG character.

Breath of the Wild has a very clear anime-esque art style, is a Switch exclusive, and has Link as the main character, marking it as a clear Nintendo property. Souls games are realistic dark fantasy games with significant western trappings and a majority PC fanbase. Which game do you think Dark Souls shares more of a fanbase with - Skyrim or Zelda?

I didn't even think this would a contentious statement in the slightest. When the last contest was going on literally everyone making a bracket slotted them into the 'western game' category when determining potential fanbase overlap and SFF.

Miyazaki's said he was highly inspired by Zelda with the Souls games too! As someone who love both Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild, but hates Skyrim, I think I'm an example of which fanbases have more in common.

I don't think you're remotely indicative of general fanbases as a whole. Although now that I think about it, Zelda might not be the best example either because it's so popular it crosses barriers - Breath of the Wild especially has found a lot of love among western gamers. Even then I'd say that the Soul series shares more of a fanbase with Skyrim than Zelda; the difference is just less pronounced than when compared to other Japanese-developed games.

I voted for Street Fighter 4 :(

MGS4 is one of the games that have fallen the absolute most throughout the years. Huge shame.

And yeah, basically the only thing remaining on PS3

to be fair there is a bunch of great games on that list. I voted RE4 , a game I have beaten literally dozens of times but FFIV and GTAIV are also some of my favorite games.

I have only played MGS4 once and never touched it again, I guess it's the same for many.

Looks like RE4's lost a bit of strength, which is odd considering VII, 2Remake, and Village were all received well.

Also, Persona 4 is winning in Ukraine. Good to see the investigation team is combating misinformation in the TV world.
