How much higher than 80% do you want to get? The cap is probably 85%.

While this site does lean old, looking at this poll https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/8115-how-many-years-have-you-been-playing-video-games about 25% of the site started gaming after the SNES generation.

So that puts SNES games in a 25% hole that they have to make up in future re-releases (or other means) plus not everyone plays a game when it was released, only about 10% of SNES owners even bought the game.

Looking at the 2008 poll, the "I started with the SNES/Genesis" and older options got ~67.5%. In 2020, that's moved up significantly to nearly 74%. We are skewing older and older, which isn't exactly new info!

GameFAQs was still relatively mainstream in 2008. I don't expect us to skew much more than 74% over the past two years. There just isn't much room for it to grow unless the PS/N64 era people start leaving for some reason.

The most recent age poll was back in 2019 but as of that point the average date of birth as calculated from age polls had backslid by about a year and a half back to where it was around 2007.

Also, that poll has been up for about 12 hours and already has around 58000 votes. That's way higher than what our contests are currently able to get.

The N64 is doing better than I expected.

I don't know if the poll is over yet, but it pulled in about 92000 votes in 24 hours.

The first ever contest started on July 1, 2002. It might be that SBAllen wants to do a 20 year anniversary contest that starts on July 1, 2022. Otherwise it's looking doubtful we'll ever have another contest (except maybe GotD3...)

A console contest is the last great unknown unless fictional characters are allowed in. Everything else is too predictable until the anti-rally stuff is removed.

The problem with contests isn't their predictability and the anti-rallying measures don't actually contribute to that anyway.

I figured that Allen will do character contests every 5 years in-between the games contests, so maybe next year.

Well, predictability has been a problem with a couple of contests.

If Allen wants to do a 20-year anniversary type thing, he could only allowed characters from games released after 2002. That'd eliminate all of the Noble 9, as well as FFX, MGS2, and most of the 1-Seeds from the last tournament.

I asked SBAllen through a message if there is a contest happening and he answered in a cheeky way, I think we will get a contest sooner than later.

The problem with contests is there aren't enough of them!

We could have had a console contest and 90s decade contest by now!

Another option would be some kind of "50 years of gaming" contest which will be held at the end of the year.

Or...he's just waiting to run the original contest again and see what changes!

I don't think FF7R closes this gap, and Samus is very clearly stronger than Mario these days. I don't even know if Seph beats Mega Man.

Please don't give Allen bad ideas. The only time a contest should have as much fodder as 2002 is when it has 243 total entrants.

Dead or Alive might be more dead than Half-Life now TBH. No pun intended.

Dead or Alive can't even get on the Evo lineup.

Half life is actually 50% dead while DoA is in quantum superposition.

Half-Life: Alyx was well-received, though it's not like VR is popular on this site. But it's something, at least.

I don’t think wearable computing in the form of glasses, contacts, VR, or anything similar will ever take off the way these companies think they will. It’s why 3D TV and movies always end up as fads.

The human eye is just not meant to be focused in the way any sort of virtual reality works display-wise, and that's not even getting into the weight and feel of those devices on the human head. That's why anything 3D only works as an attraction to be savored in a short time, not a replacement for hours of entertainment.

I bought glasses with the blue guards in them recently. Huuuuuuuge difference, highly recommend.

I wouldn't mind a redo of the original character contest, especially since I'm not looking forward to Crewmate rolling through a current character contest.

Gordon Freeman also has to worry about Tina benefiting from the female character boost.
