If this is going to be our only contest for a while and after an extra long break, I don't want that contest to be consoles. It's time for Darth Maul vs. Jane Eyre.

contests aside, it would be cool if Allen would just run “Darth Maul vs. Jane Eyre” as the poll of the day.
Someone screenshoting it and tweeting “uhhh what’s going on with gamefaqs” would probably go viral and get the site some publicity, it’s all upside.

Agreed -- though I prefer my polls more game-specific, throw a few curve balls like this in a regular Poll if the Day. What could it hurt?

The prizes are fun but really it's about the celebration of the games. I don't need the chance to win something tangible to get excited over seeing a bracket or even just a poll about your favorite Metal Gear game (which we never had to my knowledge -- closest we got was SotC facing MGS2/3/4 in a division and MGS1/MGS3 facing off). You could still get my attention for a random Joker VS Vader poll out of nowhere too.

i don’t think it’s a preference like...in a gender identity way, but I think the Sheik persona is intended to be male and it’s a cover to hide her identity, so yeah, she’s prefer you refer to Sheik as male.

MultiVersus makes me want a Character Battle with non-gaming Characters in it even more.

Deep down this is what we all want. Something new and unpredictable.

Multiversus looks pretty fun but i don't get why non of these Smash clones put items in the game. Yeah i'm one of those guys that plays Smash with items on. Kinda boring without them.

It's a disguise, so...

It's so weird to have a crossover fighter with so many different universe and then just...not have items based on those universes. What a missed opportunity.

I prefer no items, but also I would be very unhappy to see Smash lose its items. These others games without items are missing an opportunity, agreed.

I know NASB has some leftover code for implementing items. But, I'm not sure if anything came from that. There are a lot of things the NASB developers wish they could have done with the game.

Items cost development time to implement. They probably just didn't consider it a priority.

I always wondered how well Solitaire or Minesweeper would perform in a contest. Probably a weaker Pac-Man...

Minesweeper could be fun to see. I never got why Tetris is hailed as one of the best video games ever while no one gives Minesweeper the time of the day in those talks, even though they have similar appeal and playrate.

I enjoy Minesweeper for what it is, but the Tetris comparison makes no sense, it's a lot more competitive.

Solitaire gets the old people's votes. And Minesweeper is the worst game ever.

The games would benefit from the "I must vote in every match" voters assuming they go up against something with a relatively low playership rate.

Eh, L-Block had comedic meme appeal. That appeal doesn't exist for Minesweeper or Solitaire.

Not to mention it had the perfect setup in the bracket to slowly build up momentum with the format and its opponents. I don't think you can replicate that now in our current state.

Definitely not Solitaire. Not ruling out Minesweeper for meme appeal though in a game contest. Put it up against whatever the hated game of the moment is, and there's a non-zero chance of fireworks. Not likely...but these things never are likely either.

Not insinuating anything as strong of a difference as we saw with Undertale upsetting Mass Effect 3, but contest magic comes in smaller levels too.

Who wins Kefka vs. Frog? Say the match pic is their sprites.

Their 2018 performances and the recent FF6 Remaster lead me to believe Kefka would win, but these two characters have given us some of the most absurd matches in contest history. Throw in a Square/SNES fanbase overlap, and Frog could potentially keep it close.

I think it's because Tetris is a better game. It was also released on consoles. I also think that when people call Tetris one of the best games ever, they're saying that with their experience mostly being on one of the rereleases, like Tetris DS or Puyo Puyo Tetris, which are a lot more game-y.

It’s way better than Minesweeper regardless but Tetris as a best game ever contender is basically a fraud. Generally people don’t actually care about falling block puzzle games so there is basically no way anything else could ever hope to challenge Tetris’s history, influence, and popularity. It’s like if the 2D platformer had burned itself out in public consciousness and popularity before Mario 3 came out, leaving Mario 1 completely untouchable for all time. Tetris didn’t actually have to compare super well to similar games past maybe its first few years to get anointed; it just had to continue existing.

consequently no matter the site you’re not gonna find too many people disagreeing that Tetris deserves to rub shoulders with the best of the best because “IT’S TETRIS” but when it’s time to vote it’s never going to seriously compete with the heavy hitters.

I would back Kefka against Frog and not think twice.

Same. Wouldn't be shocked if Frog won at all, but I got to pick one and Kefka seems to have stronger in the more recent contests.

I'd take Luigi over Alucard, but Kefka and Frog have been fairly close in terms of strength the last few Character Battles (in which "the last few" spans 12 years at this point, augh). I'd never doubt the Frog "clutch," but I think Kefka would be the board favorite.

Luigi over Alucard would basically mean Luigi over Bowser going by 2018. Then again that also establishes Luigi is stronger than Sephiroth clearly.

I've believed in Luigi > Bowser for a while, and he did do slightly better against Tifa than Sephiroth, so no problems there either.

Fair, I just remember people saying they'd pick Bowser over Luigi despite 2008 and...wow Kirby looks bad then. Would Kirby get 46% on Sonic again? Maybe Sonic just sucks.

I don't think Alucard will be quite as strong in the next contest regardless. Netflix boost can't last forever.

The number of people who've been here over 20 years has gone up 15% from when this was run 2 years ago, so we had a lot of people who were close to 20 years last time.

Heck, I'm only a year away from being able to vote 20 now.

Yeah, I just crossed into 20 years myself. I lurked for a couple of months before making my account.

Given how the vote totals changed between 2002 and 2003 we could see another jump if we hold the poll again next year.

The rise of Let's Plays and Wikis (and the refusal of GameFAQs to include them) really killed the need for a site like GameFAQs so all that remains are people who stay for the community aspect.

I'd like to see a breakdown, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Q&A section is the most used gaming feature on GameFAQs and for most people that's a quick Google search and then you leave.
