GameFAQs contests sincerely raise a high unique bar of joy that's hard to match on the internet.

A lot of it is nostalgia from youth, I know the site and internet are different today, sometimes the anticipation exceeds the contest whether from some predictable matches or outside rallying ruining things...all that, sure, whatever, it haopens. but in spite of such challenges these contests have been truly a great way to celebrate video games and have introduced me to many of them. They connect me with this community about as much as anything, because nobody else understands how big a deal it was that Mario barely bear Crono in 2002 and Mario barely beat Samus in 2018.

There has been no substitute. Here's to hoping the contests can return again one day soon.

I will never reach a joy as much as the time I was the only one on the board to call SotC > MGS2.

Being the only one on the board to call Tifa > Sephiroth will always be a joyful memory for me lol.

Nope, I got that one, too.

My claim to fame is definitely Starcraft > Halo and Melee then winning that division.

I doubt I had an upset that nobody else picked

I'd have had Squall > Luigi in 2003 but I showed up on day 2 of the contest so I didn't have a bracket

Having Sub-Zero > Master Chief was oddly satisfying considering it shouldn't have been an upset at all...!

Oh, I had Melee winning the division, too.

That was the only good prediction I made in that division though!

Percentage-wise, it's gotta be being the only Guru (maybe only person?) to perfectly predict all of Division 4 in GotD 2020.

Always gonna be proud of calling when the Noble Nine would break though, with Vincent > Crono for second place in 2007.

And I was so close to getting Black Turtle to closing his account. Stupid technicalities.

(I also picked The Witness to win a match -- it ain't all glory here!)

I might have had Squall > Sonic in 2007, if not for the Brawl reveal for Sonic mid-contest.

I had Knuckles > Magus

because I was 14 and didn't know who Magus was

I got Kirby’s 2008 run that was pretty good. However my overall best run is GOTD 2020, would have won the guru if not for that pesky Division 4.

I also had Snake winning it all in 2013, which felt like a decent bet before Draven happened since it looked likely Samus would be in the final, too.

Rallies really are the worst.

I think my biggest upset that I called correctly was Xenoblade winning Division 4 in 2020, though Bowser > Alucard in 2018 Losers bracket is stastically my best prediction vs. the overall predicition percentage even though that was the most common result for the board/guru.

Yeah some of the loser bracket stuff had ridiculously low percentages.

I had RBY winning the contest outright, and while RBY > Ocarina seems insane, the way OoT ended up rolling over and dying against Undertale really has me wondering if the winner of that side of the bracket was always destined to pull the upset no matter what.

Though I do think a rally-less 2015 has Chrono in that spot looking back.

Chrono Trigger flattens that contest without extreme rallies. Poor Nick.

A lot of badass girls, that's who. Though I missed Ryuuko and Satsuki from KLK, my bad.

The bracket does feel overly focused on a certain kind of shounen(-ish) battle anime but your proposed inclusions were generally too obscure among general anime fans to be worth considering.

That the Kill la Kill girls got left out does seem weird though.

Obscure? Symphogear has five seasons and a lot of concerts and a mobile game that has been running for half a decade. PreCure has been around for almost two decades. And there are popular mecha shows. Yuuna is the only really obscure one.

Besides, I'm not saying they need to overhaul the entire bracket. Just, y'know, acknowledge non-"battle shounen" anime and manga exist.

Tbf the anime genre is huge and has a large number of subgenres with very distinct audiences, so I don't think it is practical to try to appease to all of them at once. You'd end up with a contest where people just vote for the one entry they know and skip the rest.

For example, I don't think most anime fans care about mecha or magical girl genres.

And neither Symphogear nor PreCure has significant western popularity, so yeah, obscure. If western fans won't watch, whatever's popular in Japan is basically in another universe.

Couldn't think up many mecha girls that quite fit the vibe and were actually popular in 2023 on the English-speaking internet. Is Asuka a badass? Is Yoko worth including? Do people still care about Kallen at this point? But I haven't seen much in the way of recent mecha anime so maybe I've missed someone.

Would Ash be stronger than pokemon trainer? I could see it, but Naruto might be kinda solid unless gamefaqs really doesn't care about anime.

Naruto vs Gohan is interesting because the latter isn't the main character (goku obviously stomps). But I guess I could see DBZ being the only other anime gamefaqs has watched other than pokemon and he stomps anyway.

I'm pretty down on the strength of anime in general here. I think almost everything that didn't get on mainstream U.S. television from like the late 90s to early 00s or so crashes and burns. In a community not specifically dedicated to anime, the nature of modern viewing - being able to stream whatever you want whenever with a vast quantity of options - should heavily drive down the watchrate of any particular show. And our demo is so old that I think even Naruto is held back a lot by its TV debut coming too late. I'd probably pick the top four non-Pokemon/DBZ anime characters to be something like Sailor Moon/Yami Yugi/Seto Kaiba/Naruto.

Goku would stomp Ash though

Anyone else listen to old episodes of The Show randomly to satisfy their contest cravings? I personally love the episodes after the bracket is revealed

My best contest moment was coming 10th in the best year in gaming contest, though my 2001 > 1997 successful pick in the semi final was basically s*** on and seen as super lucky/invalid or something by people here. I forget if there was a rally or not, or just everyone was mad that they didn't get it right.

I was one match off a perfect bracket that year, just screwed up the 03/05 early round match
