...Except Mario

Even more intense considering winner goes a chance to go to the final.

Though maybe Vincent folds hard enough to Cloud so that Snake gets third place instead.

And here we have it, the most unexpected result of the entire contest. It might have been slightly foreshadowed by Auron > Sonic earlier in the contest, but no one expected this from Kirby, and no leeching or SFF could excuse Sonic here.

Yeah the hot upset was Master Chief precontest and Dante when the match began. Kirby decided to utilize the combined power of Smash in those late rounds.

By hook or by SFF crook, Crono wins this chapter of his rivalry with Mario and advances to the finals alongside fellow Hero of Time.

The rivalry basically ended with the 2005 final, but it was nice to see Crono get one back I guess even though everyone knew SFF did it. Mario was never reacting the final in 4-ways with Link om the same side every time.

Also Crono getting to the final in place of another Nintendo character is almost certainly what allowed Snake > Cloud.

It's a solid selection. I personally really like the GC Pokemon games but I'm not sure anything is missing.

Kirby swallowing Sephiroth that easily is pretty hillarious even with the field. The Smash picture was the best, especially because 15 years later you can now actually play as them all.

I wonder if Kirby theatens to move on if Snake wasn't in Smash. Because Brawl was a strong source of Kirby's increased power and Snake might take some of that from him. That and of course whatever bandwagon factor that made Kirby look better against Snake in the semifinals than against Big Boss in round 1.

Snake led Link for 6 hours (although the lead never eclipsed 200) and led Cloud by as many as 3700 votes. Pretty sure he's the only non-joke/rally character who can make either of those claims.
KamikazePotato 11/18/2023 10:03:22 PM#131
If you stick a strong Nintendo character in that poll instead of Crono, Link might have started to sweat there.

LeonhartFour 11/18/2023 10:07:23 PM#132
Snake could've had a real shot in 2013 if not for Draven in a Link/Snake/Samus final. People forget because of Draven, but that was probably the weakest Link we've ever seen. Snake got 46.52% on Link 1-on-1 in a bonus match after the 2013 contest ended.

I imagine Samus gets obliterated like she did in Snake/Draven and that may have been enough for Link to still win, but Snake has had two nearly legendary finals performances regardless.

For a while but I feel like Snake's chances of finising third would be higher than finishing first with Mario or Samus there instead of Crono.

We've seen precious little evidence that FFVII and Chrono Trigger disproportionately affect each other. Snake was just riding the bandwagon from beating Cloud the round before and it was just enough for him to hold on to 2nd.

I'm just saying I would found it more likely than him getting first.

Cloud would also be the only one not in Smash.

It wouldn't have to do a lot for Snake to fall below Cloud.

That was from March 27th, and part of the March 22nd-April 1st range has been accounted for by the GotD2 contest. If not for a slight delay to the start of GotD2's first match, that entire range would have been covered by that contest.

February 29th is another date that has never had a contest match, since our only contest which covered the entire month of February was the 2010 contest. 2010 wasn't a Leap Year.
