Possibly, but the rest of the poll is pretty weak. I'm not sure who beats him out.

In 2010, Ness was projected to get 63% on Lloyd, so there's a decent gap there.

Would Link getting 63% on a character represent a larger gap than that?

Because fodder getting 63% on fodder wouldn't mean that much if I'm thinking about this correcty

Ness isn't fodder! He's basically the standard bearer for what a midcarder is.

Lloyd is higher end fodder but fodder nonetheless.

Wonder how Chun-Li would do on this one now. She's probably the only one who makes it who didn't make it originally.

Chun-Li looked really good last contest.

If Chun-Li kept boosting like she has the last two decades, she might equal to Ryu outright.

Little Mac is the other one that might do something with the Smash boost but yeah.

Now this is one where I'd be curious to see how it goes today. X still dominates, of course, but how well do HK-47 and Vault Boy do? I'd also assume Spyro makes the cut this time, at the very least.

I think HK-47 and Vault Boy would both drop. Would be Spyro and Wario advancing instead I suppose.

Vault Boy was a weird case where he got 40% on Leon Kennedy and then we never saw him again, not even in 2013's massive field

Vault Boy, recognizable as he is, is no one's favorite character. He would never get in again without a B8 push. I also think the current state of Bethesda hurts him...although maybe the TV show would make up for it.

Falco also made it out of that poll but I’d expect Falco/Wario to go the other way nowadays.

Eh, I think Wario is pretty low on the Nintendo pecking order. I'd still take Falco over him.

Well, people at least cared enough to get Wario into the most recent contest, which Falco didn't manage in a time where Smash was the hottest thing around. I doubt I would have thought Falco > Wario felt right even at the time of this poll if 1v1.

Does a Left 4 Dead actually make it if there aren't freakin two of them in the same match??

2010 sucked due to the 12-hour matches (first few rounds anyway), to the point I'm surprised they did vote-in polls in the first place. I rather have some sabotage or interesting filler be 16 seed fodder instead.

They did get one character in, so it's possible they could've gotten a second.

Yeah, the vote-in polls from the 2010 contest, were a waste of time, especially since the winners were 15/16 seed fodder anyway.

I'm honestly surprised John Tanner was never brought back yet, even in the 2013 cluster contest.

Somebody has to be 16 seed fodder, and I rather have a total nobody be 16 seed fodder like Breloom. I barely remember Breloom to be honest. Better than Luvdisc, Castform & Feebas at least. Jin Kazama sneaked in as 16/8 seed fodder, despite zero board 8 support.

Ah, I'm rambling. I plan on leaving this website for a while after my Gen 3 contest wraps up anyway.

I feel like this one might go pretty much the same. Maybe KOS-MOS could edge out Thrall.

Yeah, Peach also does even better. This was notably the day CATS finally missed a contest and the never miss club went from 17 to 16 where it still is.

I feel like everyone would be okay with another tournament (character or game) even if it came with no monetary prize. People would still vote and care. Perhaps that can be a solution since I know the biggest hurdle in making the tournaments is the legal/monetary side of things.

We've said that for years and Allen refused to run a contest with no monetary prizes

I know anectodes are nothing compared to actual contest stats, but to a lot of 90s kids who's first console was the 64, Wario was just a sliver below Mario and Luigi in recognition levels. Other than Smash bros and SM64, he was there alongside Mario every game. Kart, Tennis, Golf, the Party games.

I'm sure plenty of people preferred Wario to Mario for various reasons.

Waluigi felt like far more of a forced new character we're meant to like to me.

Having 10 games in this poll helps here, because the previous years of GotY poll using this poll set-up (seasonal polls) only had 8 games per poll instead. There were often major snubs with the polls that had only 8 games, so I'm fully in support of having 10 games in the seasonal polls. Maybe we'll get fewer major snubs with 10 games.

Winter should be a pretty strong season, what with all the JRPGs. Spring is... Dawntrail vs. Erdtree? Maybe Trails is still on the upswing, but I feel like the two DLCs are the biggest releases. Oh wait, Thousand Year Door Remake too, though P3R doesn't look too great here, so I assume being a straight remake hurts a bit. Summer is Astro Bot vs. Zelda, Fall is an easy Metaphor win, I think?

As is tradition, time for an early overreaction.

This is a really lousy performance by Rebirth. Not enough to think that it won't win GotY because this is a fairly weak year, but...I don't expect Like A Dragon to be worth much.

Even if Rebirth takes this back overnight (I imagine it will?) this is a complete bomb.

In 2020, 62% of the site had a PS4. Currently, 49% of the site has a PS5. That's probably part of the reason Rebirth's doing worse.

In fairness, I don't think this is a weak poll. There's lots of decent games here. If you removed LaD, no one would be complaining about Rebirth's performance.
