Nah, it definitely had an impact, even just on B8. There were rallying cries of "we can't have Brawl be our best game of the decade," as if it'd be an embarrassing outcome for the site where a Tetris piece won a Character Battle.

Yes but I am of the impression that the contest could have been called whatever and the same people would still think it would be embarrassing to have Brawl as the winner. I don't think that's the same thing that seemed to boost BotW, Wichter, Dark Souls etc in GotD2, in particular with forced voting in that.

Brawl's anti voting noticeably started being loud after beating Melee.

I think the title of a contest can have a large effect on how people vote. In an extreme example, if the title was "most hated video game character", only a handful of voters will autopilot through and pick their favourites anyways. But, I'm not sure "Game of the Decade" really moves the needle much in terms of getting people to vote against the favourites. In a villain contest, I would definitely pick Bowser over Mario. Red vs Blue does better in a rival contest than a straight tag team.

When was that again?

I disagree and I didn't even think there was a debate. Not that they didn't boost regardless, but they overperformed at times due to the contest title combined with forced voting. This isn't relevant in latter rounds, but in the early rounds. Ultimate not scoring the same blowouts as the rest of the strongest games is a good example. The lowest game of both round 2 and 3 in the x-stats being the BotW opponent is another good example.

Ganondorf was the overwhelming favorite to reach the finals in the bottom half of the bracket, and so it was no surprise that he put a massive beatdown on Giygas. Why didn't we have a Bowser vs. Ganondorf match set up in this contest again?

(Don't worry. Next year, I'll be wondering why we had Aerith vs. Zelda set up in 2006 instead of Tifa vs. Aerith followed by the winner facing Zelda!)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/2002-triforce-division-round-1-ansem-vs-cats

There was some debate over what CATS was capable of entering this contest as someone whose existence is basically an internet meme since relatively few people actually played Zero Wing. There was some debate that he actually had a vote ceiling, that there was a limited number of votes he was even capable of getting.

Either way, Ansem was a hefty favorite, with an Oracle average of around 65% here. When the match started, CATS jumped out to his early board vote fueled lead, but then something bizarre happened: He didn't drop off. He stayed in the lead. In fact, his lead got as high as 178 votes before Ansem finally made a push.

However, it was two hours into the match before Ansem actually caught up to CATS, and it was expected that he would just take the lead and pull away. Once again, CATS surprised us and fought back. The match was essentially 50/50 for the next three hours.

When the morning vote arrived and the kiddies woke up, Ansem finally pulled away for good, but CATS had left his mark. Another surprise was seeing that Ansem only had a 55% overall prediction percentage.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/2003-triforce-division-round-1-dr-robotnik-vs-sin

For those of you who remember Tai (of "TAI'D UP AND HANGED" fame), this match may have been his magnum opus (or whatever the opposite of that is). He was loudly insistent that Sin was going to win this match easily because it's the main villain of a super popular FF game. Plus, who really cares about Robotnik?

To be clear, Tai was not the only person picking Sin here. It had a small amount of support on the board, and Robotnik only had a 55% prediction percentage sitewide. However, he was definitely the loudest and the only one calling for a decisive victory.

The crazy thing is that Sin may have won if not for that awful match pic, which is literally just a screen grab of its fin from a boss fight early in the game. It's hard to know how much it impacted the final result, but when the margin is a mere 2000 votes, you have to wonder.

As for the match itself, Robotnik was actually over 60% for the first thirty minutes, and then the percentage gradually dropped from there. Actually, Robotnik's lead peaked at 2500 a little more than halfway through the match, so Sin managed to shave off around 500 votes in the second half.

In fairness, I don't think a good match picture for Sin the Fin really was in the cards. Yeah, it could have been better for Sin, but Robotnik was always going to look like a million bucks next to whatever ended up in the right side of the pic.

The villains contest had a lot of dodgy match pictures, and I'm pretty sure half the reason we have a black background in round 1 was because it was the background on the source images for a lot of the lower tier villains.

These days, there's some decent options for Sin, but just like Kefka, that's largely due to spinoff games and remasters. And they still would look like s*** next to any piece of official art for Eggman/Robotnik.

2005 - Gets whipped by Kirby powered by the Nintendo Boost
2007 - Loses to Pikachu before we knew Pokefear was a thing

I'd say 2003 since he was technically really close but I don't think he was given much of a chance by the board to actually beat both Ganondorf and Magus
