I disagree on both counts. We've had wire to wire stalemates that were
exciting because the margin was low. I also wouldn't say the match had
no trends. Prime getting the big lead to start and then going 50/50 is a
trend. Half-Life 2 cut off a few hundred votes with the night vote but
the pace was so slow it had no chance to catch up. The point is that nobody really worried Prime was going to lose past the first hour despite the final margin being somewhat close. (edited 12/15/2025 12:02:58 PM) |

Like, say, if HL2 was in the lead for the first half of the match, then MP came back and won by 1800 votes, people would've been worried about MP losing for a while. Sure,
but those are different trends. It doesn't mean this match had no
trends. It just means Prime was really frontloaded (as it often is). |

This was basically a "third place match," featuring the two semifinal losers. SMRPG was likely bandwagoning a bit by the time of its MGS3 match. So 2015 SMRPG being about as strong or maybe a bit stronger than 2010 MGS3 might be in the ballpark. This was the only time The Show went live and did so for the first few hours of the match. We all knew that the winner had a great chance of winning the whole thing, so yeah, this was a big deal for multiple reasons. Melee got off to a fast start but it wasn't able to build a lead of over 400. About three hours in, Brawl began slicing through the lead. Three and a half hours later, it overtook Melee and pulled away for a fairly comfortable victory, breaking the 51% mark for the final hour and almost winning by a thousand votes. Melee fans will point out that it won in the US, indicating that it would have won a full 24 hour match or a day match. I don't really agree since Brawl was using the morning vote to pull away and it's not that different from the ASV in terms of trends. Regardless, a match like this is one reason I wasn't a huge fan of the 12 hour format. A match this massive deserved the full 24 hours and we never got it. I wonder what Melee gets on Brawl now. I've always wondering to what extent SSBB and SSB4 retained their strength. I don't think any other series have games crash in strength just because there's some new hotness. But, it's also hard to imagine SSBB being nearly as strong now as it was back in the day. There's also the fact that while SSB4 and SSBU may be better games, SSBB (and SSBM) were the ones GameFAQs voters would have played against their school friends and built fond memories with. attribute that OoT/FFVII result compared to OoT/FFIX to it being harder
than ever to get blowouts due to anti-votes, which is not a problem for

I see OoT vs FF7 in the context of Link vs. Cloud. Cloud vs. Link was debatable and Sephiroth vs. Anyone other than those two was a Sephiroth blowout when FF7 vs. OoT was an easy FF7 win. By 2010 Cloud was already closer to the field than he was to Link, and the 5 years after that didn't have anything to change that trend. Simple yet effective, and it made MGS3 look like the underdog...! Seriously though, board opinion was split here. MGS3 was a slight favorite in the Oracle, with some thinking that a night match would work to its advantage. Shadow of the Colossus got off to a fast start and had nearly 54% at the freeze. However, MGS3 quickly rebounded and took the lead two updates later. It took nearly two hours for the lead to hit triple digits and the lead hovered between 100 and 200 votes most of the night. The morning vote actually worked in MGS3's favor here, as it was finally able to pull away from Shadow of the Colossus and win by nearly 500 votes. Had MGS3 just gotten lucky with the timing of the match, or could it have won a day match or a 24-hour match? It's hard to say, but at the end of the day, Big Boss had finally slain the giant. |

hilarious part about making that picture was that I threw it together
as a joke in about five minutes, before Shadow of the Colossus even beat

Prime got off to the traditional Metroid strong start, but after about 30 minutes, Fallout 3 began to push back. The two went back and forth for about the next hour and a half, but then Fallout 3 pulled away from there. |

Yeah,
games seem more resistant to changing their strength. For Fallout 3 to
get stronger, there would need to be a highly successful re-release,
like the Oblivion remaster, or an organic re-examination of the game's
merits, like with Majora's Mask. My guess it that Metroid Prime would beat Fallout 3 a little worse than before. The site getting older and more insular probably benefits classic Nintendo games. It's Reyn Time. |

Resident Evil 4 only won one update, and it was by 2 votes. This was easily FFX's best performance in this contest. It should have told people that it was plenty capable of winning this contest, but this is why we can't have nice things. |
