Honestly though regardless of what happens from here this poll is kinda why I had faith in DQI&IIHD here. I realize 6% isn't a great performance but that's a good job by DQIII to not completely collapse in the face of a much stronger JRPG in Metaphor, Thousand-Year Door, and Final Fantasy VII.

Delta honestly wasn’t that good of a remake, plus it wasn’t needed in the gaming space. MGS3 is good enough on its own.

Now Silent Hill 2, or an OG MGS remake? Yeah, those games aged like milk.

The fact that remakes/remasters have won 3/4 game of the year polls here is pretty pathetic. This was a good year for games!

Seance of Blake Manor is legitimately one of the best games of the year

It's tied for 3rd best rated game of the year at 91 (with DK, Silksong, and Split Fiction). Only 33 (92) and Hades 2 (95) are rated higher.

People should check it out!

Remasters shouldn't be a part of Game of the Year polls.

EDIT: Remakes too unless they make significant changes (i.e., RE2 is fine but not something like Metroid Prime).

DQ1 & 2 fit in the major changes category. Xenoblade X adds a 20 hour epilogue, which I'd probably count as a major change.

And Tactics has a completely new translation and full voice acting

Been saying this for years.

They should just go back to how it used to be with a separate poll for remakes and remasters. I think this year kind of shows that the season based polls are no longer working because nearly all the top games this year came out in April to September. Either go back to originals/sequels/remakes and remasters like it was a few years ago or my preference which would be genre polls but not as granular as it was the one time it got used. Something like Action/Action-Adventure/RPG/Sports&Racing/Other.

Speaking of which, the other thing these winners all have in common is that they are all RPGs. That also explains why Delta is not doing as well.

I think remasters/remakes are fine. The voters can decide if they really want to vote for one or not. As seen with Delta, it isn't a free pass.

E33 is likely to win goty here, but you guys are dooming too early.

Yeah this would be a reasonable compromise, maybe one for expansions and DLC as well.

We're putting more thought into this than the site owners ever will, just FYI.

The funny part is, it behooves the site to have more remasters/remakes of old games because it can drive traffic to old guides that could still be relevant. Ain't no one coming here anymore for help on newer games.

its funny because I think some of the newer guides are pretty well organized and look good for specific sections, especially the Trails and LaD ones

Yeah the Yakuza and Trails guides are great.

Can confirm that Trails guides on the site are fantastic

I'm good with remakes. A remake of a film would get nominated for Best Picture. The extended edition of Return of the King wouldn't.

It's kind of silly that this even became a conversation. Other websites wouldn't need to discuss the merits of excluding remasters from poll, because they just wouldn't vote for a remaster as their GotY, especially against stacked competition. Like Big Bob said - this was a good year for games.

I mean none of these games will actually win GotY because Clair Obscur is going to dominate the final

If there was no Clair Obscur we could legitimately be looking at Final Fantasy Tactics as our potential 2025 Game of the Year. If that's what people want to vote for, sure, but I'm still going to heavily side-eye it.

Yeah, but are people actually voting for the gaming experience they most enjoyed? Or just voting because they recognize the game in the poll?

(yes, I know that that's how it's always been, my point still stands)

I can say that I personally would vote for Suikoden HD over Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, but that's because I actually did buy and play the remaster. I don't know if other people can say the same. (I actually voted for Pirate Yakuza, because that's actually in the spirit of the contest)

Do you want people to vote for Bananza because they heard it's good, even if they haven't played it?

I'd imagine the reason the Switch 2 games are underperforming is because most of us don't have one yet. Remasters tend to be cheaper than a brand new game, to boot, so it's no surprise that we're playing more of those.

Excluding the Switch, we've still got Silksong, Ghost of Yotei, Kingdom Come 2, Dispatch, Silent Hill f, Split Fiction, Blue Prince, Hades 2, Death Stranding 2...it was a very strong year for games.

Like, I get why a site like GameFAQs is defaulting to remasters. That doesn't mean I can't criticize it.

None of those are JRPGs.

FFT winning would be hard for me ti complain about. Similarly, while I don't like The Game Awards for various reasons, it is difficult for me not to appreciate that FFT won one in the year 2025.

Eh, Delta would have done better if that were the case. These remasters generally sell pretty well and we're the target audience for most of them.

If Silksong is in the ballpark of the original Hollow Knight, FFT Remake is maybe a bit better than FF15 (in 2020). So I don't think FFT Remake is some juggernaut of strength on GameFAQs. But, GameFAQs just doesn't care for Hollow Knight.

I think Silksong is probably pretty strong for an indie. It got a lot of hype, particularly because of its long development cycle.
